How do diesels become "used" to easy start?
Whats the theory behind: "once you use easy start on a diesel it will always need it to start"

i suspect it has something to do with the volitility of the ignition causing problems with the bore and rings, making it more difficult to gain compression and therefore making normal starting difficult, so the engine requires the easy stuff again and again, until it wont run without it
easier solution would be to solve the problem in the first place, saves time and money, and theres less chance of throwing a big end bearing.

When my father drove an S type Bedford fitted with a Perkins P6 engine for Thermalite in the 1950's it was a notorious bad starter! The engine needed Easystart even when it had only run a few hours before, the compression was that low that even a lad like myself could turn the starting handle with ease. Well one day it would not go at all, so they squirted a great load of easystart into the inlet and hooked it up on a rope behind one of the Foden 8 leggers! When my old man let the clutch out at about 10 mph there was a tremendous BANG and the bottom of the engine sump blew off!! The transport manager then decided that it would be a good time to rebuild the engine after all, penny wise, pound foolish!

the P series Perkins, and even more so the old L4 were really really REALLY bad starters, the number of times i've read about the P series engines giving trouble when they were fitted to tractors, they were diabolical starters, i sometimes can't figure out when people preferred to the P3 to the standard 4 cylinder diesel fitted to the TeF20's, its a superb starter, now thats made me want to go and fire the fergy up. lol.
one of my neighbours used to drive an old Peugeot 106 1.5 litre diesel, and for the last two years they had it, the glow plgs were banjaxed, and it would take somewhere in the region of 10-15 mintues to start on a normal morning, or roughly the same time as it would take to fit a set of glow plugs! haha
my Nashers a funny one to fire up, without heat it wont fire up cold, but the heat start is very simple in that all it does is have a heater in the inlet manifold and a squirt of diesel into the manifold and this gets drawm into the engine, simple but works, though i haven't tried it in the cold of winter as yet. when warm it fires up dead easy anyways.
