Lister H3 pump
Hi All,
Does anyone know how to undo the valve caps on a Lister H3 pump?
If i have to drill them out, can i get new ones?
They are very tight as some time in the past someone has had a go at the end plug and made a mess right mess of it.
the small drive gears are very worn, the teeth are almost pointed, the piston is very rusted and the crosshead had to be cut
to get the con rods off.
cheers
steve

Re: Lister H3 pump
Is that the caps with the internal square Steve? If so I would get some square section bar or tube that is a tight fit and weld it to make a T shaped key, that should shift them though you may have to warm the cast iron of the pump. Be careful as the threads can strip on the brass caps when you unscrew them, replacements would be very hard to find. I have done an H1 and the caps came off ok.

Seems like you have a tough one there Steve! I can only suggest more heat, the H1 that I did I had cherry red BUT then the cap may move but leave the threads behind, thus ruining the cap. Does the cap HAVE to come off, or are you just checking the rubber valves? Leave well alone if possible.
Pete.

Hi Steve
After the trouble ive had recently with steel nuts on a brass bar I would say dont be surprised if it breaks!
Sounds harsh but I had a garage try and remove steel nuts of the climax pump so as to fit new piston cups, and as a result I now need a new brass par turned up for me.
Keep us posted though

Lister H3 pump
Hi All,
Thanks for all your help and advice, i have now removed the caps with only
minor damage. it is easy with a big vice, 1" square drive T bar, 5 feet of gas pipe and
a lot of slow heating, only took about 1/2 hour.
cheers
