You might want to dribble some oil across the skirt of the piston, or leave the oiler on for a while before starting - often it takes a while for the oil to get to the piston, and after standing for a while it's likely to be quite dry.
And of course make sure it is working!! May sound daft, but it's easy to raise the lever and assume that it is, but it might be blocked or incorrectly set!!

About 6 - 8 drips per minute if I remember correctly for the piston oiler Ryan.

ive decided to go back to it all next weekend, as if im honest im a little lost, this is my first open crank, so need to find out lots before even trying to start it
