https://s823.photobucket.com/albums/zz155/smenkhare1/Stuart%20Turner
I've spent 3 hours trying to upload photos (subscribing to Photobucket and learning how to use it, or trying to, it doesnt do what I want!) and I still don't know how. This link should (Copy and paste into browser) take you to my (smenkhare1) Photobucket account where you will see in the Stuart Turner album some pictures of a Stuart engine which I bought at Malpas and cannot identify. It is a kit, judging by the need to drill and tap holes to mount the carb and to machine what I think is the mag mounting bracket. Also there is no keyway on the shaft to fix the flywheel.
Can somebody please tell me what model it is and where I can get a copy of the assembly instructions.
Thanks a million,

Jim.

What you have there is a Stuart turner p3,

The p3 was Stuart turner attempt at a industrial engine, the designer later redeveloped it into the p4,
I can date it better when home but its probly from the early 20s

The carb you have is off a villiers, as Stuart would have had a brass in house one,
If its the same as a p4 there is a tapered bush and nut that holds the flywheel on.
The magnetto is driven straight from the crank shaft.
Il check for a manual when I get home.

Parts for the early p range is slim to none, I had trouble getting p4 stuff.

Thanks, Steve, I had a feeling it might be a P3 or P4 from looking at the photos on the Net but without the carb and mag it's difficult to get an idea. Am I right in thinking it's a kit? I would be delighted if you could find me a book.

Best regards,

Jim.

OK, Steve, are there any details available anywhere on the n type? I need to know what carb and mag were fitted and how.

I was right 1st time, P3, sadly there is no manual for the p3.

you can see in this pic how the mag is attached, using the bracket you have.

Stuart, Unidentified Im090627BR-StuartTurner-25

I would have said the bit in pic 8 and 9 would have had the holes bored out for the crank shaft and mounting it and the bracket to the engine.

the car would have been mounted on 2 studs, the P3 had a odd aragment using the crank shaft to drive part of the card not sure why though.

there is a few good pics here.

production dates for the p3:

P3 3101 - 4605 Nov 1919 to Jun 1928

SE mag might be the best place for parts.

Sorry both P and N were production engines.

Hi, Steve,
I've just come back from the dentist, minus one tooth. So it's a P3? I wonder why the machining is not finished? At least I know what to get for it. I missed a brass Stuart carb the other day on e-bay. Are they all the same? I hadn't thought of the little cup thing being a fixing for the mag, I must check the dimensions compared to the flange on the crankcase.I see I'll be having fun with this one.
Do you know the size and spacing of the carb fixing studs? Maybe I can use the Villiers carb as a stop-gap. It's going to be a devil holding the block at the correct angle on my lathe to drill the holes!
Thanks a million, Steve, you've been a trmendous help.

Speak again soon,

Jim.

Most the carbs a diffrent for each model, as you can see te ones in the pics have a drive band used for something, a P4/P5 carb would work i spose would just be throttle governed, I know where there is some p4/p5 carbs.
I sold my P4 a while back now so got nothing to compare it to, the villiers carb would work, it a bracket was made.

This was my P4,

a carb from one of these might work, but I think it would need to be throttle governed.

Stuart, Unidentified Empty P4

Post by smenkhare Fri Sep 24 2010, 20:15

Aint dat nice?
Steve, The second picture of the P3 in your previous post shows a flnge cast into the block for the carb. Mine does not have this, just a carb-flange-shaped milled surface around the inletb port which is inclined and I have the adapter to make the carb horizontal. One side of the flange has 1/4" mountiong holes, the other side has smaller (3/16th?) holes to attach to the carb (though I need an adapter there, the Villiers carb just clamps on to a tube. I guess I should be able to make something based on these observations. What I have to know before I start is the spacing between the studs so thatif and when I find the correct carb, the stud holes match up. Do you want to sell one of your spare P4 carbs?
I reckon the BTH mag should not be hard to find? Do you know the model number?
I'm starting to feel happier about restoring this engine. I reckon it was nicked from the works before it was finished but never made to work, so I have a brand new engine!

Jim.

P.S., please tell me if I am becoming too demanding with all my questions!

It could be a test engine or a botched cast one?

Stuart, Unidentified Empty Stuart Turner P3(?)

Post by smenkhare Fri Sep 24 2010, 22:22

No, Sorry, Steve, I don't have one yet. I'm nipping into Germany tomorrow for my daughter's birthday, so I'll get one to you ASAP.
All the orifices are just holes, no flange around them. I suppose they need to be tapped to take a pipe.

Most of the P ranges were fitted with a cast expansion chamber which is attached with 2 studs, the above p3 is a special one.

Steve, this one ("I was also given this nice little Stuart Turner") looks more like it but it has flnges on the inlet, exhaust and cooling ports, which mine does not have. Nevertheless, with the correct adapters, I could fit this carb and exhaust to mine. Pity he doesn't identify it by model nomber.
I aslo have a picture of the "Petrol LIGHTWEIGHT Engine" which looks very similar.

Steve,

I've added a photo of the exhaust side to my Photobucket folder, there IS a flange but it is not machined in any way to provide fixing of the exhaust system.

Hmm, well you have a odity there, I think you best bet is to try the ST info exchange:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/stinfoexchange/

It shares castings with a P3 but the cylinders flanges etc are diffrent.
