How to time up the LISTER D?

It's now time to time up the lister it's been stripped down engine checked over and been re built back up, I can't see any timing marks on either of the 2x gears.

What is the best way to do this is it piston a tdc valves closed ?

Help please?

If the engine is going to be on load then the correct timing would be 20 degrees Before Top Dead Centre.

If the engine is only going to be used for demonstration purposes then the stationary engine book recommends 10 degrees before top dead centre is better.

Were are the timing marks are they on the mag for the degres?

It's all worn on the timing gears no marks so would you know how many teeth 10deg is?

Hi Piston power,

The easiest way to explain this is like this:-

Measure the circumfrance of the flywheel and divide that by 360,

ie if the flywheel has a circumfrence of 360mm divide that by 360 and you will get 1. therfore 1mm will equal 1 degree 10 mm will be 10 degree etc etc.

Thats about the easiest way to work it out.

The tdc position is when both valves are closed and the piston is obvioasly at the top. Once youve done that just mark all the gears to the way you find easiest.

I would say yes to that mike, as all your getting is the amount of degrees before TDC.
I had a mate who had problems with a Ruston on a drag saw, it ran but like a bag of nails told him the timming was all to hell and beyond but he wouldnt belive me so a wedger was layed down.

I set the engine up like described above and it ran as sweet as a nut, he was gob smacked. all the gears were marked but they were not to clear the markings. so we redone the markings and its still going strong now.

It will work for any engine mike.
