To buy or not to buy, Kukje, that is the question ..?

Post by Dyslexicbloke on Tue Dec 07 2010, 17:38

Hi folks,
I realy should come clean right up front ...
I know nothing and my question relates to a relativly modern engine .. I think.

I am about to set about building a micro CHP plant and found some 8HP water cooled diesels on ebay.
[ [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ]

The seller tells me he has had them hanging around for 10 years, the remains of a batch of 20 his father imported !!
Aparantly all steal pot, 8hp@2200 RPM continuous up to 13HP@2400 RPMn Max and electric start to boot.

On the face of it a realy good fit for a 2.5-3KW CHP unit..

What I am looking for is an opinion ... I cant find a thing with a general search of the web which leads me to believe that the engine is probably a short lived copy of something else, but what?

If anyone has any thoughts at all I would be glad of them, I think they are probably worth a punt at the price but thats just my feeling and the only thing I do know is that I dont know enough.

I look forward to any and all comments
Thanks in advance
Al

Have engine ... Looking for comments

Post by Dyslexicbloke on Tue Dec 21 2010, 16:41

Hi folks ….

Well I bought it …. It came with a manual, which is nice, and a bit of digging around on the web suggests that it is a common layout apparently produced by a number of Chinese manufacturers and generically referred to as an S195.

It seems to be a circa 1940’s design, if not earlier, and very solid.
The build quality is far better than I was expecting.
Haven’t run it yet, just too cold to be messing around out side.

If anyone has any experience of this engine type I would be interested to hear about it.

Thanks for all the welcome messages
Alistair

Hi Alistair,

the design was something Dong Feng came up with in the 1930's, loads of manufacturers have made them, soem good, some bad, they have straight cut gears on the timing, and can be a bit noisy in operation, but they are generally not too bad, you need to run them at around 60-70% load, otherwise, like any diesel, they will glaze on the bores.

unusual choice of engine for a CHP project mind, but could prove to be a winner, though the usual route is a slow revving engine like the Lister CS, which probably would have been cheaper than the £450 of the engine on the ebay link.

cheers.

Paul

for a while, there was only two of these s195's in the country, both had been inported by lister for comparison and examination, then moved on afterwards, one of the pair was in the SEM around 1990/1991 time, and the article went into some detail about the engine.

cheers.

Thanks Paul interesting info.

I found this ...

Not sure I agree with everything that the guy is saying, for starters my engine has a lube oil filter and appears well built, but the general tone is encouraging I think.
I plan on using an oil pre-heater and dispensing with the glow plug mod.

I’d be interested in anyone’s thoughts or opinions.

Thanks
Alistair

Hi Alistair,

its the first time i've read that article, and my first impressions are that the author doesnt actually like the CS type, and is really going out of his way to discourage its use, but if you read carefully, he is comparing new for new, i.e. chinese built s195s against indian built CS's, in which case the chinese engine really is better, india still cant build decent engines. lol.

however, he did neglect one fairly important issue (either that or i didnt see where he'd written it) noise. an S195 at 2000rpm will be massively more noisy than a 650rpm CS, and i know which one i'm more confident in to last longer aswell lol.

the injector literature is interesting, and i've never heard it said that a 6/1 has a bad combustion chamber design, it may be crude compared to modern alternatives, but it was one of the first full diesels on the mainstream market, so i would probably have to say that there are good things and bad things to take from that article, but chief one is, you've got your S195 now, and you may as well run with it, but i would personally run at 1000-1250rpm rather than 2000, purely on the grounds of noise.

Cheers.
