Need some help Plz Empty Need some help Plz

Hi all. Need help trying to identify this stationary engine.
I found it in the bottom of a barn i was working in today.
I asked the farmer if he new what it was but he doesn't.
He also said that he wanted rid of it so if i wanted i could have it for FREE!!!.
Obviously i accepted his offer but now i need to no what it is.
I think it may be a Lister CS but not exactly sure at the moment.

Hello,

Its not a CS, it might be one of the lager Lister petrol range, H or bigger. or could be a, A or B type, hard to tell with out seeing the rest.

If its not a CS then why does it have an injector pump???

It's the bottom end of a CS diesel.

Does the CS share a bottom end with the Larger petrol engines? the casing looks similar to a L type.

I think they used the bottom end of the L type and changed a few bits of it for the cs, mainly where the injector pump sits.

I have managed to get the serial number off it now, which is 9500
Can anybody help with finding out how old it is

That will be an early CS around 1934,see if you can get a number off the injector pump too. A letter to DWE will give you plenty information on the engine. Is the rest of it there? Bill.

ye i got all of the parts other than the fuel tank and water hopper.
Found a serial number on it 9500
It also says on the same plate 5 HP, 800 Rpm but i cant make out what the spec says

Hi, It will be a water cooled injector model. Cooling tank and fuel tank can be gotten or made up. Soak pump and injector in a tin of diesel for a few weeks to get them free if you have to.

these engines are still heavy at my age but fortunately i do have a lot of lifting gear to move them with.
Also due to my job i do get quite a few of 45gallon drums, so i have saved 1 for use as a water tank

Hi Kevin, Unless you are going to work the engine hard, in my opinion a 45gallon drum cooling tank is far too big.

I use a 2 gallon fire extinguisher as a cooling tank and it barely gets hot after 8 hours running at rally speed around 300 rpm, I can wash my hands with the water at night. Between the tank and the water jacket it ends up around 3 gallons in the system.

It is after all a heat engine,the warmer you can get the engine the more efficient it is, also if they are running cold you will get a carbon residue seeping from the exhaust what an American engine man called "slobber".

hi Kevin...
or you could use an old grease bucket,Ive used them in the past,and they've been spot on..
the bigger the tank the more water you need, and when the rally has finished you will have a river of water to cope with...
there are smaller drums about,about 10 gallon one would be more than enough for it...

Hi kevin,

its a lister 5/1 or as the others have said, with its modern day nickname, a lister CS, runs at 500-600 rpm, superb engines, that last forever, the only thing to really look out for is clapped main bearings, and frost damage, the rest in largely replaceable/repairable.

at 9500, you've got a pretty early example, and the 1934 date suggested is probably right to within plus/minus a year or so.

is the engine complete, i realise by the picture its in bits, but are they all there?

i've got two of these engines, a 6/1 which is the same as this one, but rated to 650rpm, and a 3.5/1 which is the baby version, well i say baby, thats the same size externally, but with a slightly smaller piston! regardless, both weight around 470kgs.

Ye i got all of the bits with it,
The big end shells are definatly tired but i have found new ones on ebay along with a wide range of other parts.
I cant see any frost damage on it but i may come across some when i start to clean it up, but hoping not.

Any frost damage on these engines is usually on the cylinder behind the valve push rods.

Bill,

do you ever get frost damage on the opposite side of the Head, i.e. the side wit hthe water outlets on?

i only ask because mine has grinder marks on that side, the 6 has been ground off, making me think someone has been there doing stuff they shouldnt have been doing.


anyways.

Kevin,

not had much experience with problems in the bearings area myself (bill may be able to confirm or deny this) but i seem to recall that you cannot grind the crank undersize on a cs, something to do with 'stepped surfaces', so check thoroughly that the crank surfaces have no signs of 'picking up' and if they are okay, you may get away with polishing them and fitting new bearings.

I did see an engine with damage to the opposite side I am sure it was in SE magazine,not usual though or at least I have not seen it before. If the damage is only cracks they can be repaired easily, what I have done in the passed is "Veed" them out with a thin cutting disc in the grinder and filled it with epoxy..JB Weld or similiar.

You are also correct about the crank due to stepped surfaces.

If it is light scoring on the crank a polish out and correctly fitted new bearings for rally purposes or light use should be OK.

Great engines and easy to work on with plenty of room around them. Things can be a bit heavy though ie Electric flywheels and the cylinder, can make me grunt anyway but I am an old geezer compared to you young bucks.

When rebuilding them I find it easier to fit the piston in the cylinder then fit the cylinder to the crancase and then fit bigend to crankpin,saves trying to squeeze rings into cylinder and holding the weight of the cylinder too. Works for me.
