Not A Good Day
Hello All
Today has not been a good day. The bamford 4hp has a devolped a slight knock when the flywheels rock backwards and forwards it is in the piston. on further investigation it is a slight sideways moving when the engine changes direction. it moves slighty to the side and cuses a thud. after this we started the engine to see if the noise could still be heard but whether it was louder and its not if anything no knock at all. so unsure on that one. but then the inlet valve cotter pin come out some how even though its incased but it did letting the valve go into the cylinder and bending the valve. fortuntantly we have straightened the valve out and had the piston out and to our amazement it has done no damage to the piston. after straightening the valve it is running again. but it has always had a slight backfire and we believe this to be because of a weak spark and it is not sparking all the time and drawing fuel through and not combusting it give us a unusual noise
so that engine has not made it first engine rally to my dissapointment.

Lewis just look on the good side you could have broken the con rod, bent the crank or put a hole in the piston so think positif you will sort it

Hi Lewis,
Looks like you had a lucky day in the end if you only bent the valve, if that was me it would have buggered everything in site.
Have you always had the backfire with the engine?
If so that may be whats started the knock, if its sparking in the wrong place ie at the top of the stroke (BTDC) it will be trying to push the piston back down the bore therfore putting a lot of pressure on the big and small ends.
If you get that sorted it will stop the wear and you might get away without to much of a rebuild.
Hope your luck changes soon.
