Poxy Amanco

Dragged the Amanco out today to try and solve some of the issues I have with it's running ability's, Yes I know it's an Amanco so cheap. The biggest problem I had was it not governing at all so after stripping down all the moving parts and cleaning the paint off, I am a bit heavy handed with a paint brush everything was working smoothly, after a fuel/water/lube up I gave it a swing. Bingo off it went running with the govener open and closing as it should. Now it is working I have uncovered another problem, it runs like a sack of nails. I have got what I think are timing issues now, the igniter is set to trip when the spokes are horizontal on the compression stroke, is this right? as it does seam a little to advanced to me, I seam to recall somewhere is a long lost instruction book that this is right but would like clarification. Also it doesn't run very even, I have twiddled the mixture screw back and forth with no change, put a load on, albeit a light load, no change. The only thing I can think of is that it has a smallish lump missing from the choke bowl that is fitted to the bottom of the carb, I have tried to cover this to see if that makes any change but it didn't.

Hi , Is the engine a hit n miss or TG ? Your horizontal spoke ignition thingy is a new one on me, not saying its wrong or otherwise.
I time the magneto this way.Roll over the flys by hand on the compression stroke and just before the striker flicks the ignitor, stop and fit the magneto that has been properly prepared to fit.
A early engine with straight striker can be fine tuned easier with the length of the rod,swan neck striker require a bit more playing with.

The little lumpy thing on the bottom of the mixer bowl is the manual control for the choke. You can use a aerosol can lid to give choke by pushing it over the bowl. Not really necessary if your engine is in fairly good condition.

i have an amanco book,its a little one that's has the timing marks etc....
if you want to send me your land line number i can phone you and perhaps sort something out about printing it and sending it to you...
i will leave it up to you....

Its throttle govened Billy. How I timed it was to turn the engine untill I thought it was at the right point then pushed the pins in on the mag to lock the drive gear in place. Once bolted on there is fine adjustment on the striker however I am not sure if these work the same as a plug when it comes down to timing.
Will try the can lid tomorrow.

Well had a good day and a bad day. Good day was remembering where I put the Amanco instruction book, found that and went to check all the timing settings, all was as it should have been so decided to have another fiddle with the carb settings when the engine was running.
Before starting I cleaned both the non return valves and checked them, all ok so here goes...
Fuel on, crank on, swing swing swing BANG!
Engine fired, crank handle flew off (Always a good thing) straight into the flywheel spokes and bust the mag bracket
Wanted: Amanco 21/4 Hired man Mag bracket for skew gear Mag.

If your bracket is broken above the push rod chase you will be able to run it on a battery and coil, remember to switch your spring over on the ignitor pins.
The part you are missing on the choke is just a little knob (????? no answer to that!!) that is held on with a split pin through the stem that is exposed. If you want to take the air intake off you need to heat it as it is heat shrunk to the mixer.
Mag bracket appear in the UK rarely and are a bit expensive, they come up on US Ebay from time to time but are still expensive in the long run because of postal and handling charges.
Incidentally ,about the only engine I am happy putting a handle on is a Lister D. I prefer to roll the flywheels by hand on an Amanco and they still can bite.
Bad luck on the bracket though.
