Norman T300 starting and Lister D greaser Empty Norman T300 starting and Lister D greaser

Post by Disbos Thu May 26 2011, 14:51

Hello and thanks for the friendly welcomes. I joined as I have inherited two stationary engines and could do with a bit of hand holding from people who really know. I am now the proud owner of a Lister D, a Norman T300 and a Lister pump. I have had both engines running, the Lister after following some helpful instructions on YOUTUBE and the Norman by experimenting (could someone post the correct Norman starting proceedure)
Some questions if I may.....1. The Lister has a round grease device on the cylinder - how do I fill it up? 2. Can I run these engines on normal unleaded petrol? 3. The top of the Lister carb rotates, following the instructions I rotated anti clockwise and the engine starts and runs, however if I then center the circular carb top the engine stops, should I just leave it at the starting setting?

Many thanks - David

Norman T300 starting and Lister D greaser Empty T300 info

I can help on the T300.

Unleaded is fine, its what would have been used from new.

Quick question does it have a impulse mag, click when turned over, or a normal rotary magneto?

Starting:

Turn on Petrol
flood carburettor by depressing the tickler
close choke
Give it a bit of throttle, thumb wheel between the governor and carburettor (unless its a marine one? which has a big handle)

For a Impulse engine A quick crank over compression is needed

For a rotary magneto a good few swings may be needed

once if fires disengage choke and away they go,

Here is my in need of tidying up MK1

Here is a MK2

and a MK2 with impulse

Many thanks Steve, I have the impulse magneto by the look of your videos. So by pushing the button on the tip of the carb I can stop the engine.. I will try that next time rather than cutting the fuel supply...my stepfather was very active in vintage motorbikes but very ill by the time he took this engine on as a wreck. You mention a choke - I can't see one, where would it be?, I have a Solex carb which looks to have been non original (bike by the look of)... The good news is that I can start it and enjoy it running on unleaded, it makes a great noise. I will post a video of it running as soon as I can.
Thanks again - David

Hi David, my T300 is back in Cornwall so cant get a pic of it, the Solex carb should be original, the same carb was fitted to the SC's which I also have.

On this t300 from the carb there is a metal tube coming off the carb to the metal air filter, there is a lever underneath the air filter which is the choke

I knew Steve would be able to sort you out David, the forums expert on Norman engines he knows his stuff on the less well know engines, try him on Stuart Turner one of the best for info. I think the forum has someone that has knowledge on just about every engine going.

Stu.

Phillip Gallimore can date you engine and tell you who it was supplied to, I can pm you his address, If you send him a nice letter which detail the serial number of your Norman and a SAE he will send you the details on your engine.

He also can supply spares

Cheers Steve

Excellent, many thanks. One thing your close up does show me is that I don't have an air filter! I just have the uncovered hole in the carb... hence I thought it was an old motorbike carb he had put on it to get it running. I am away for the weekend now but will go choke and serial number hunting when I get back.

I think the Air Filters were made by Vokes, and they are some where between hens teeth and rocking horse poo.

From what you said about the impulse magneto I would say its a MK2.

Hi, I have managed to upload a clip to youtube. Serial is TA5368. It started first time so I missed it on the video.

Looks and runs well, nice its got its original exhaust, bit like hens teeth now, I need a set for mine!

The carb has a strange modification to cable pull but if it works!

From the serial number 1944, it is a MK1, the bth magneto wont be fitted with impulse.

Cheers Steve
