Can anyone help a new member with some information, I know it's difficult to date Jap engines as there's not a lot of information has been kept.

Hi all, and many thanks for your welcome messages, I currently own 2 old engines 1 is a petter that runs as sweet as a nut therefore is sat awaiting some TLC while I crack on with the other which is a J.A.P. and in need of lots of attention including identifying and sourcing a mag the carb as had a bit of abuse around some of the brass jets but apart from that I think it will run sweet as every thing else is perfect for its age, talking of which I,ve been studying this forum re the dates and engine markings and they don't seem to give me much idea of its origins maybe someone would be able to help the number stamped on the usual place is :- 6/C84395/1 they have been well preserved under thick green paint and are very clear to read. Some of the other numbers cast into the crankcase are 18541/2F and on the cylinder MC with the numbers 19054 underneath, Look forward to reading your replies and hope I can help in some way later. Many Thanks Bulldog Bert.

Thanks in advance guys I'm sure you'll do your best to try and help.

Stu.

Here's the link for the JAP dating info

http://www.donaldantiquerototillers.com/JAPEngineChart.htm

From the info I would suggest that is a 1948 but don't know the model. Was there a 2F ? A picture would help.

Hi, Thanks for your response there is a a number which is cast into the crankcase which read 18541/2F whether that is the 2F you may be looking for other than that the stamped numbers appear to be shorter than those on other models in that list, I,ll try and get my head around putting a photo on here. Cheers.

From this side it looks like a 4/2. But it has the longer manifold which would make it a 6. I think these used the same flange-mounted magneto (Wico A-936BZ) as the 4/2. The Model6 had a bore of 85mm and a stroke of 102mm and developed 5.5 bhp at 1800 rpm

That lists it as 576BZ the same as the 4/2 but it is a 936BZ in my records. I suppose either number should be the same mag.

with the villiers e30 jap4/3 i bought last week the only info on mine that matches the jap is on the dip stick top mine has 4/3 stamped into it
as no other numbers on the engine mate up to jap as its stamped up as villiers with the usual none datable villiers serial and engine numbers on plate and block ,the magneto is my last chance for dating the engine as a the layers of paint match to the engine perfectly ,all my wicos are month year dated on my shelf,so fingers crossed this one is to..

Thanks for that all of you, now I'm gonna have to find my magnifying glass and check these things out the oil dip/fill cap is reasonably legible so I,ll check and let you know, work is taking priority till the weekend though unless I'm lucky and get snowed in. Cheers

Hi, there are no other markings that I can find so I think it will be pot luck with the mag numbers you have past on so far and a search of all auction sites etc together with car boots jumbles etc should be fun and a good excuse to rummage around, I live in North Lincolnshire if anyone knows of good stationary jumbles etc. Cheers Again.

Just checked in my JAP engine manual and the correct Magneto for the 6 is the Wico Type A-576.BZ. The 936 is fitted to the 4/3.
