Hi all,

The fuel isent the same mr Jones, the shell, bp is refined say 5 times, and the supermarket stuff is only refined say 4 times, hence why its that wee bit cheeper at the pumps. But in th elong run its more expensive because the engine dosent run so clean.

Kev, if you are using old petrol, or the carb has had petrol left in it from last year it will put like a varnish coating over everything thats why you had to open the jets a little bit more. If you clean the carb it should run again at its proper settings.

I have to agree with Paul, best to buy better quality fuel, cleaner to run with and more MPG so cheap fuel is not a saving in the long run. I've also noticed a lot of filling stations changing there suppliers to companies I've never heard of, has anyone else noticed?

I think your rite Jonesey, I never put asda fuel in my car, it runs terrible. So bad once that I stopped my missus putting it in anymore, the car was miss-firing and blowing back soot out the back. (DIESEL)

I always tend to fill up with texaco or BP seems better to me, and the car performs much better.

Martin

I'm not so sure that the fuel quality is any worse nowadays but it is different. Remember that these engines were designed to run on old leaded fuel which probably wasn't as 'chemical' as today's refinery processes. Diesel didn't have the additives in that it does now either. Maybe putting a drop of Redex in your fuel can might help. I use a proper Briggs & Stratton petrol preserver. Oh, and I don't think that there really is much difference between branded fuels and supermarket ones. Most of them come from the same refineries. Don't mean to sound contentious but that's just my opinion.

It might be worth running some carb cleaner, redex or similar through all your engines it won't halm it just a thought mix a can with a gallon of fuel then do each engine.
Kev I don't think because it's a small garage the fuel would go of that quick, I've had petrol for years and never had any problems with it.

Just a little story some of you may not remember the last fuel shortage about 12 years ago. Well at the time I was running a small bus company and I couldn't get fuel anywhere so I cancelled all coach bookings and I was draining fuel out of the coaches to keep the buses and school contracts running. Well I had a couple of scrappers and thought I 'd drain the tanks. I put it in the buses and both the drivers asked what I'd been doing as the buses were running a lot better. What it was the old diesel from the scrappers was about 4-5 year old and they change the fuel to low sulphur, just shows when the difference can be spotted in a bus.

stu i can remember that time and the weather here was flooded roads and rivers bursting the banks
i had a 45 gallon drum off diesel in the back of my "bedford midi van" and was just coming home from town when the river raised onto the road next 10 secs the water was coming in through the doors ,i thought my luck was up as there a lake the otherside the road ,but the little van kept going and back onto the higher ground again ,opened the doors and let the water out the back door nearly noocked me off my feet ,if i didnt get the 45 gallons of fuel
i think me and the van would of been in the bottom of the lake , and very glad id converted it a few months earlyer from a 1600 petrol to a izuzu 1900 diesel, the engine and bonnet was under the middle seat so how it kept going ducks only know lol
