Yet another D Type!
More scrap has arrived! Couldn't resist this old girl, Spec 12 D 97413, supplied to Glews Of Howden, Yorks on 10/12/1930 it has the early type 'spit pin' oil dipper with no splash plate. It also has a dead magneto, and knackered main and big end bearings, plus a few carb bits missing, oh well, it is 81 years of age so in similar condition to me ha ha. I may just leave this one in its original paint, I know that Billy Purves will approve if he should read this!

Re: Yet another D Type!
I have on ebay at the moment a complete carburettor and other various items for the Dtype

Great looking d type though i would like a very early shaft drive one at some point.

Re: Yet another D Type!
Nice find Pete, good luck with the restoration, knowing how many engines you have to work on you'll be 81 before you get it finished (well it's not that far away)

Re: Yet another D Type!
Choosing to ignore the comment from the last poster, who isn't THAT far behind me in age anyway! I have stripped the engine down. I ordered David Edgington's Lister D story on tuesday and it arrived this morning, great! Seems that 'my' spec engine had that type of breather for only a short while, about 6 month's, and it has a few detail differences to later models. The big and small ends are worn but I have a spare conrod with good bearings so it is just a matter of swapping the oil dippers over as mine just has a short one, I also have a spare crank with good main bearings. The rings are totally shot though, it has been rebored to +30thou so I will order some fresh ones and get the magneto off to be overhauled and hopefully all will be well.

Re: Yet another D Type!
Hi Pete, That is a nice engine , with as you say short run breather and all in one cover.
Will be nicer running away softly with its fresh oily jacket on. Easy to load on trailer when you are not worrying about scratches to paint work. But, in some ways harder to keep like that.
Good project. Bill.

Re: Yet another D Type!
Thank's Billy, the head and tank are oiled and hardening nicely in our spare bedroom and the new rings arrived today. Just a matter of honing the bore and getting a fresh crank out of a scrap D type as the main bearings are in good condition and then reassemble and oil, that is if it ever stops raining! The mag is being renovated which may take a while due to a backload but I dont really need the engine until the Cromford rally in August.

Re: Yet another D Type!
Pete, I gave up on boiled liniseed oil as with the damp weather up here it was never drying unless it was put on July - August so I just rub down with fresh engine oil.

I havent tried it before Billy but it seems dry after a couple of days, mind you that is with the parts in a warmish room of course. The crankcase will be a 'tester' as that will be in the garage, but I have plenty of time. I put some undercoat on a Petter A and even that has taken over a week to dry properly, I think that we have only had one dry day in the past two weeks! I just thought that I would try the boiled oil route, if it doesn't prove successful then at least I have tried, if it had been a much later D type I would probably have repainted it as there isn't a lot of the original left apart from on the timing case which is pretty well intact.
