First outing of the season and went to a crank-up at Ashbourne. Took my Jap 2s and my Lister Pump with B&S 3hp both of which were running fine when put to bed. The B&S had a new carb diaphragm fitted last year and the Jap was repainted (badly) earlier this year. Neither of the swines would run. Mad Despite others having a go (Thanks lads) both were suffering with fuelling problems. The B&S will start if I pour fuel directly into the cylinder but is not drawing fuel from the tank. As it's a big strip down job (well, big enough to not start on a windy rally field) to re-check the diaphragm I have left it for now but I will probably take the engine off and sell the Lister pump like I did with the other one I had, or run it myself off the Petter.
The JAP was just playing silly sods. Started fine every pull but as soon as it started to warm or you tried to shut the choke off it would stall. This one has the Villiers carb and two mixture screws as well as a governor. If anyone has any ideas on how to set the mixture and governor on this carb I would appreciate it? We tried all kinds of combination of settings and the result was exactly the same. And I damaged my elbow by pulling the starter rope so many times, so if it doesn't start playing ball soon, that'll be another engine out the door! Smile

Dan it's sods law that they run perfect at home and act up on the field. Was the fuel you were using ok as it's strange to have fuel problems with both engines.

that looks like a AMAL carb there tempremental if the gasket is weaping air in all so remove the mixture jets and fuel bowl check fuel is flowing in freely
then blow out the jets with compressed air reasemble jets all the way in and then screw back out 2 1/2 turns , see what happens on test run

Just went out to have a look at the carb on the JAP and guess what greeted me?

Remember the fuel leak from the tap which I thought I had fixed by fitting a new tap?

You remember the one ?

The one that caused the paint to lift a little and meant I had to repaint with Hammerite?


Well, Hammerite is rubbish too............... Mad

ive had it after winking man the top coat was still hard but the HAMMERITE metal primmer soaked the fuel up betwen the tank and the tap and now i can
lift the top coat away from the wet petrol soaked hammerite primmer lol
2 x engines in need of repaints due to hammer shit paint products, toughestand durable paint my arse dulex cops better lol lol

i now use mason p 1k paints mixed to your colours and very good quality finish and petrol oil resistant cheapish to for finish
for me better than craftmaster at 35 pounds a liter

Dan why don't you try these, any enamal paint should be ok for painting engines and these work out more for your money.

For my small aircooled's I just use a car paint aerosol and have never had any paint issues from petrol, I do leave it to harden for about a week whereas with my brushing paint I keep fuel away from it for at least a month. That is why when I restore an engine I always do the tank and carb first before I strip the rest and leave them on the radiator to harden off.

When I get round to it (a bit busy at work at the moment) I will definitely spend a bit more time on the cowling. I think I am going to spray it this time with a VHT car paint. I'll let you know how I get on.
