Hi all, I have Just started in this lovely hobby, got myself a lister A 1941 its ex RAF with pump stand & lister H3 pump, I am wanting to strip the old green paint off & repaint it with the RAF gray/blue does anyone know the gray/blue RAL colour or what bits were gray & what bits were blue ?

Plus what’s the best for striping off the old paint, I did read that thinners is quite good so I have ordered some up & a few wire brushes

many thanks

I'm afraid these were never originally painted in RAF colours, they were all supplied in the mid brunswick & only ever re-painted in RAF colours when it came to it being necessary for maintenance purposes.

There was a big debate about this on another (less friendly) forum.

I also heard that when they were repainted in RAF colours the flywheels were sometimes painted white, for safety. However, if they were repainted towards the end of the war (unlikely) they would've been khaki anyway, or possibly battleship grey, but more likely khaki until the RAF regained their colours & paint stocks.

There's nothing to stop you painting it in their colours though, but so far I've never seen two different versions of RAF blue/grey (& it was more of a grey) that are alike. It seems modern paint manufacturers just can't get this colour right.

As for paint stripping, I find modern strippers are good, but they take a very long time to work. You're best to apply a good coat of it (I use Wickes own) last thing at night, then first thing in the morning (well, not sparrow-fart, but when you're up & about) nip in & give it a 2nd coat.
Then, once you've had coffee/tea & breakfast & checked up on this forum & your emails(about an hour, maybe less) it should be ready to attack with scrapers & wire brushes.

I have recently discovered the brilliance of drill powered wire brushes, these are also good for stripping, but not to be used on softer metals, just cast iron & steel work (they can make a mess of aluminium & brass etc). Angle grinder wire brush attachments are reputedly even better than drill ones, but even more abrasive & slightly more dangerous. Be careful where stripper is landing when wire brushing, make sure all other engines & stuff are covered).

Also, be careful as the paint may contain lead, which is why I prefer to use stripping fluids. It will need a good wash off afterwards with soapy hot water (I usually then rinse with just hot water, you really don't want any stripper left on there, it could ruin your new paint job)

Also, try to look out for an oil based primer, water based ones are very hard work, if there's any trace of oil on the metal it just won't take.

I highly recommend Rustoleum paints, they can be used on bare metal, although are better with a primer. They give a fantastic deep shine after just one coat (sometimes better with 2, but one careful application should suffice). Of all the different paints I've tried they are head & shoulders above the rest & can be mixed in any RAL colour by your local paint specialist. Most other paints will need at least 2 coats, mane need 4 or 5, so the extra cost of Rustoleum is worth it when considering this. (I'm also told it contains the best mix of rust inhibitors, but don't quote me on that).

Hope this helps, sorry if you knew most of it already Embarassed , good luck with the build & take plenty of pics for us if you can. cheers

Oh yes, one last thought, my dad knows the name of the colour you're after. I'll ask him what it is called & see if I can find it for you on the RAL colour chart.

Ritchie is the old argument about what colour it should be, at the end of the day it's your engine paint it what ever colour you want. It would make a nice change to see a Lister A painted in RAF grey/blue with or without a white flywheel, I'm sure you'll be happy with what ever colour you choose.
As for paint removal I like to use the twisted knotted wire wire brushes that fit into an angle grinder but you must use a mask as it may well have been a lead based paint used in the past. Thinners/petrol might work depending on the paint that's currently on the engine but most paint strippers should work but some are better then others and it's a long slow job to remove all the paint.

Good luck and keep us informed on how you get on,

Stu.

Yeah, my drill powered brush is a twisted one, it's very hard wearing, but I an't help but think an angle grinder one would be better. More powerful & faster. Just needs a little more care, as with all power tools, never get complacent.

nutgone, stu, thank you so much for that its a great help.

I would like to paint it the raf colours just to be a little different, be great if you can get me the colour & painting the wheel white sounds good.

I fired her up thursday I was a little apprehensive, what with water coming out of the oil wing nut filler cap & water in the carb my heart sank, cleaned it all out,so got family member that’s a fitter to give her the once over (that's what family is for) make sure there was no major problems, he had the once over & I gave her a turn O M G sweet as you like I was like a little boy just opened the Christmas action man set all over again.

daft question, but oiling the parts on the engine is the new engine oil ok for that?? Embarassed

Pretty much any old oil will do in the squirt can. The main engine sump oil itself is another matter, it can be a bit of a contentious issue, generally no one uses modern synthetic oils or ones with detergents in them. Personally I go into the motor factors & ask them what their cheapest, most basic oil is & they tell me, it's usually a cheap multi-grade, similar to Tesco value (no longer made) or the Tesco basic one for petrol engines sold in blue bottles.
Some enthusiasts won't use modern multi-grades, but I don't see a problem with the cheaper, more basic ones as they don't tend to contain detergents or any synthetic compounds, I've used them for years in all my engines with absolutely no trouble.
However, you can also buy so called "Classic" oils, which are single graded (or "straight" oils) more like the older oils of times gone by (which were never as good as modern oils, which doesn't make sense to me, but anyway...) but these can be expensive & are really more for cars & bikes. If you do decide to go down this route then I would recommend the Comma brand, they do a pretty reasonable Comma Classic which is quite reasonably priced. Nothing wrong with these classic oils either, they're just more expensive. It's not like these engines are worked hard anyway, so it's unlikely to make a lot of difference. But modern synthetic or detergent oils will probably be too thin & make the engine smoke, & possibly make it rattle a lot.

Hope this helps.

BTW, I would love to see your engine in RAF colours, I was only stating what I knew on my other posts about paint colours. One way or another most of these RAF engines would have ended up a different colour to mid brunswick, I would absolutely adore to see one in RAF grey/blue with white flywheels, simply because it's something no one seems to do. There are a few in RAF colours, but no one seems ready to paint the flywheels white.

these are only my thoughts though, it's your engine, you paint it whatever colour you like, pink with purple spots if you like, it's entirely your choice. Wink

I had a look around to see what I could find, you need an enamel paint for your engine as anything else will be affected by petrol spills etc.
I found these 2 but you may have to check the colour of the first one on phone but a good price.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Construction-Machinery-Enamel-Paint-Aircraft-Blue-1lt-/360134236537?pt=UK_BOI_FarmingEquipment_RL&hash=item53d9ac5979

Not sure if this is enamel so a phone call is needed here also but a lot more expensive.

If you have a paint supply shop near you they are normally good at sorting things out a worth a visit.

I have to agree with Nuts on what he's saying about oil, a good classic oil is Morris a few member do use it.

Is your engine stood outside? has it got a good cover if it is? The water needs drain for the winter no matter where it's stood.

Stu.
