Are you having trouble getting it started then? The timing should be pretty forgiving on these, so as long as you're in the rough area it should go. I'm convinced the Tarpen engine is based on these, if that's the case I think it's about 1/4" before TDC on the piston, dunno what that is in degrees.
Thinking about it I usually find 1/8" before TDC a good place to start, that 1/4" sounds a little advanced to me, but I'm pretty sure the Tarpen is there or thereabouts.
If it's a tricky starter you may want to look down other avenues, like all the trouble I had recently getting the Tarpen to start (I'm not saying any more unless I have to )

well im splitting hairs here
but all petrol villiers manuals say they are 3/16" BTDC on the piston, then rotate the flywheel untill the points are closed ,then tighen up to crankshaft , if i was you diddy i would mark the output side of crank or pulley to a casting mark for lining it back up too in future
and the fit the flywheel loose and find when the points close ,and mark that up so you cheeck and double check as your tighening up the flywheel,as they always move of the settings as u tighen the flywheel to the crank ,with that keyless stupid shaft idea of theres
always takes me 2-3 trys to get it all tight and the timing in the right place
kev
well im splitting ha

Have you tried a different condenser??? It could be that.
I didn't realise you were running off a car type coil, I'm guessing the original mag coil is no good then?
Do you have a multimeter? One of us can run through testing the coil, my car takes the old fashioned coils, I can give you some ballpark figures from my Haynes book of lies.
Kev: Ah! So it's 3/16" I was going on what the Tarpen was set at, never seen any marks or manuals for it (& I didn't have my glasses on at the time ). The Tarpen has a WICO FW mag anyway, not the Villiers thing with no key (I remember them now, they were fun! )

Try 3/16 points at opening point I use a continuity tester to get that bit right as I can never find my glasses good luck with it !!!

I use a fag paper, but that's mainly because I smoke roll-ups, a continuity tester is by far the most accurate way of doing it. Besides, hardly anyone smokes any more, us smokers definitely are a dying breed, but I never quit anything in my life before, I'm not about to start now! (maybe next year).

See if you can get a motorbike coil, it'll be smaller. But a car one will be easier to find. Ebay is probably your best bet.

Re: villiers 1934 marvil timing
Have you tried new condensers???
I would say check, check & check again the wiring. If the coil's fine & the condenser's working, as long as points are opening it should spark.
I don't suppose you've considered getting the mag sorted & doing away with the car coil then?
