Lister A trolley re make
after a while i have got so fed up with the trolley i made for it when restored it i have decided to make one thats better to steer like a american style where axle turns under the frame .
So have made a start from some 3 x 4 tulipwood
a few pictures
The steel disc will be welded to the turning axle for a turntable which will be greased and nice and thick so no fear of anything bending .
Sanded it down today , just need to get some danish oil and give it a few good coats with it .

Its just practice as my dad is a chippie well a self taught one so does it alot for his job , so he taught me alot of times its just practice . Much easier doing joints in hardwood than softwood .

Nice lump of tree Matt should look good with the Danish oil covering it. So don't forget to take a few pics once you've oiled it up.

Re: Lister A trolley re make
bit of an update on the trolley ,
I know progress has been slow but not had much time when not at a rally or work to do much work ..
spend some time this weekend getting it more up together .
Got the steering axle pained with its 3rd coat of red oxide .
Just done the last coat of oil on the trolley now . Its had 6 thick coats of Danish oil and brings the grain out really nice on the Tulip wood , is a bit of a odd grain as goes from dark to light and then one side looks dirty but its just how the grain is .
Just need to drill a hole in the flat plate and fit the front axle once its been painted . Then make the axle for the rear axle one the front is on so i can get it all level .

Re: Lister A trolley re make
Tulip wood comes from the Poplar tree.
It is getting very popular these days because it is readily available and pretty cheap. Not the best wood for engine trolleys but certainly not the worst either. I would like some ash or hickory myself but I don't know where to find it and even if I could find it, I doubt I could afford it so I will probably be going down the same route as Matt pretty soon.
Nice job there, shame we couldn't see any pictures of the jointing process

Oak doesn't react well with ferrous metals.

Re: Lister A trolley re make
The tannins in oak react with iron and make it rust. Mind you, I reckon you'd be fine with a painted/oiled engine. I only learned that fact when I was discussing gun stocks.
Just make sure any metal touching the oak has a good protective layer on it.

Re: Lister A trolley re make
i know a place where i can get allsorts of hardwood for trade but as say you have to pay for it ...
The Tulip wood was £30 for 3 mtrs of 4 x 3 and thats including running through the thicknesser too .
Ian the jointing process was done using a router and i find thats a much neater job , I keep borrowing my dads trend one . Think i need to dig deep and buy my own , verry useful tool , and if make cabinets extreamly handy for the grooves etc .
Just painted the front axle with some black , waiting to dry off now and can fit the front axle to it .

Re: Lister A trolley re make
I'm thinking of attempting my own mortice and tenon joints with nothing more than a set of sharp chisels, a couple of decent wood saws and a lot of patience. It won't look as clean as that job you're doing there but as long as I take my time I reckon it should be OK.

nothing wrong with doing the joints by hand , i have a nice set or irwin chisels and a wet stone to sharpen them , nothing worse than a blunt chisel .... ends up splitting the wood in some cases . I jointed all the rafters in the shed with that set i bought just for the job .
just mark up your lines and saw the outside lines to the depth and then lots of cuts between the outside cuts , that way have lots of small chips being knocked out rather than big chunks and a risk of taking too much out .. Sorry if im telling a granny how to suck eggs here

Re: Lister A trolley re make
Only problem I have with my joints is when the weed falls out the end. :stick lol: :stick lol: :stick lol: :stick lol:
I enjoy working with wood but i'm self taught, and I've been thinking about getting a router and the table for years but I'm not sure what I'll need, maybe if I can work out what i'm using it for might help.
A well made joint is better then a handful of nails and looks better.
Ian have you tried any salvage yards for some wood, they tend to have plenty of choice of wood, just needs a clean up and put in a surface planner to true it up, then away you go.

I remember when I used to paint all my axles and wheels etc, don't bother these days!!

matt stop swearing at me "paint" spit spit ... only reason why i paint the wheels and axles as made from new steel thats unpainted and stop it rusting ... Tell you what aerosol enamel paint is great give it 1 coat on a warm day and dies lovley with good protection and not much hassle
