Another Lister D Empty Another Lister D

Post by biomed32uk Sun Mar 03 2013, 19:17

These are some pics od the Lister D I picked up last week, not in too bad a state this one except the mags knackered, the coils gone off to be rewound.

This one is No 7739 DH4 , built on the 12th Dec 1954 and was on a hay elevator originally.

In the mean time I have had a look over it, everythings moving, I have drained the tar out of the sump, had a look in the crankcase, removd the spider that was living quite happily in the rocker chest.

Some new oil, rebuild the mag, do the valve clearances (miles out), re time it and its in with a chance of running. I can play around with it then while I get in with the other one.

The first photo is as found, the second two are back in the workshop, I've given it a bath with the Karcher, and removed the petrol tank to clean it out.

Another Lister D Empty Magneto

Post by biomed32uk Sun Mar 03 2013, 22:14

Apologies for the first photo, it was a screen scrape of my phone.

Anyway while dismantling the end plate out of the magneto before I could have a close look at what goes where it all went ping, and two insulating washers fell out. Embarassed One I reckon goes under the moving points contact pivot on the post, but not sure where the other fits. It looks as if it has had a screw head tighted down against it at some stage, but was not under any of the screws I removed.

I can't find any clear drawings anywhere, is any one able to tell me where they fit, or post a pic of the contact breaker end of an SR1

Another Lister D Empty Mag coil

Post by biomed32uk Mon Mar 04 2013, 09:06

I did some searching around, and ended up in vintage motor cycle forums. Magneto repairs in Stroud, Glocs was getting some good reviews and thats where the coil has gone. The charge for that is £80, seem a very friendly helpful place as well.

I will report back when it returns but it probably wont be back this week, and I have been sent on a course via work all next week so by Tues evening I will be missing my workshop.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted out.

Ouch seems steep considering you can pick up a working mag for £50!

Think I'd pay the extra £30 and get one I know will last for years to come.

Another Lister D Empty Magneto

Post by biomed32uk Mon Mar 04 2013, 12:40

I'll go with that take on it Stu, £50 for something thats unknown and the coils on its last legs seems a gamble, it may pay off, it may not.

£80 and the jobs good, and will hopefully stay good with some come back should it fail.

Anyone got a photo or drawing of where my washers go.....

Another Lister D Empty Another Lister D

Post by biomed32uk Tue Mar 05 2013, 20:35

Done a bit more on this one over the weekend and yesterday, day off work and had some free time.

Had another look in the crankcase, and got all of the sludge out, horrible Rolling Eyes , while I was there I noticed the con rod was the wrong way round, proud part of the bush was facing the crank, so managed to get the crank/flywheel assy out in one lump, cleaned that side of the crankcase out of more sludge, spun the piston/conrod round and re assembled.

Much cleaner crankcase ready for some new oil, popped the governor apart and cleaned that out and up and it all looks good.

Just the valves to adjust and she all looks good, wait for the mag coil to come back, rebuild that, set it all up and we'll be seeing if she'll start.

Then its my working play toy... Very Happy Very Happy

Haha Geoff,

At least you have some rewards coming soon eh? I'm going to have to wring my hands and pout now as I can't get my parts fast enough to race you Laughing

I'm working on it tough, soon I will have what's needed to sew it back up and give it a go.

Nice find you have there, hope it will do!

Regards, John.

I've got a Lucas SR1 mag on the bench here. Can't guarantee it's been put together properly, but I will have a look & see what washers go where for you.

They're a pretty crappy mag TBH, you rarely get one with a working coil these days, not like the good old Wico series A magneto, the coils seem to go on & on with those (although I have even had a busted one of those).

For future reference the coil from a Wico A mag will fit inside a Lucas SR1, it might even fit inside the RS1, but I doubt it, as that has a strange split & bent laminated core.

You can also fit a Wico A, a Lucas SR1 & a Lucas RS1 onto a Lister D, both of those Lucas mags were fitted standard on the D over the years, but they never fitted the Wico, which is a shame really.

The Wico mags generally fetch less on the 2nd hand market as well, I've seen them go for a tenner with a good spark. The SR1 was used on motorbikes though, which gives it a greater resale value, therefore making parts for them more expensive too.

My local magneto man will do a Lucas SR1 coil for £75, & he has them on the shelf, ready to go. You would need to add postage to that price though, & it requires an exchange, so that's 2 way postage. I will always use him though, as his encapsulation technique is unique to him & so far unsurpassed.

Another Lister D Empty Magneto

Post by biomed32uk Sat Mar 09 2013, 18:05

Cheers for the offer of looking Nuts but it seems to be sorted now. Magneto repairs gave me some advice, and there's not too many places for insulating washers to go, and if can't get something electrical to work then I have been in the wrong job all these years.

Coil came back today, along with a new condenser.

Another Lister D 2013-03-09151135_zpse9ad1923

And I had some time this afternoon and rebuilt it, had a heart sinking moment on the first assembly as all back together and nothing, but worked through the connections to find when tightening down the connector post on the points, the condensor connection was just managing to short out. That re worked and it gives a good healty spark with just a flick. Trying to get the wife to hold the wire and tell me if she could feel something, but she would not fall for it.

Back onto the engine and time it up and I reckon it will run, damn nuisance being stuck on a course all next week away from home but work pays the bills, and provides funds for hobby things, so off to learn all about the in and outs of VMWare.

Yeah, that terminal for the points/condenser is very close to the chassis of the mag. Even worse on the one I have here, as it has a metal cover, not a Bakelite one.

Glad to see it's working though. 👍

Don't you just love it when things are done nice?

Looks a treat Geoff, I'm following as I don't know what's next other than the IHC lol.
Have my bearings sorted though, back in the "D" game soon,

For rewinds like this I wouldn't dream of doing it myself. I could never do a neat job like this.
Looks like you have done some elbow on the cleaning job too, looks good.

Regards, John.

Seen a few of those mags looking like that at the autojumble today (unlike the Wico A type, they were used on motorbikes as well as stationary engines), I bet they weren't as new & shiny on the inside though, they had price tags well in excess of what you paid for your coil as well.

Funny how something costs so much more just because it goes on a motorbike, rather than a stationary engine.

Thanks for the comments on the Mag, not quite finished as the screws that hold the cover on are chewed up, waiting for some 2ba screws to show.

Thanks Nuts for looking, makes me feel good that spending money was not in vain, well it wasn't because it now works.

Nice engine that Kohler btw, been following you on that thread.

Away from home now so while I am sitting in a classroom my mind can wander to Listers....

I know how that goes.., the teacher will catch you day dreaming and say "you were not Listering" at which you can correct him and say you were too! Laughing

I never worked out why the Wico A was never used on motorbikes, it was easily capable, in fact they are extremely similar to these internally (the coils are interchangeable I believe).

Anyway, that's a bit :offtopic[1]: just be happy your mag will bolt straight onto an old Matchless (amongst other makes).

(Brummm brummm! Twisted Evil ) lol!
(sorry, my silly side coming out. I must be happy, makes a change).

Must be the time of day Nut,

They let you out this late? Very Happy

It's only 8.25 pm or so here, so I figured you're up late.
I had an old Matchless once while still in Holland, rode it illegally as I was under the age allowed for them (21 then), so my brother in law went and bought it back from the Police just before it was due to be cubed and used it for work another year with a lot of wrenching (he didn't know of the problems) Laughing . It always had mag end problems as the tapered end was knackered, but a lot of exhillerating fun for a teen.
I had Status! Very Happy

Cheers,

John.

Cheers Nuts, I will rest happy that should I get a vintage bike that the mag may be donated to that. Very Happy

Funny you should say that as my neighbour said he had a vintage bike in bits somewhere, never pursued that one any further, perhaps I should one day.

Anyway back to my course now.....

If you don't I know a man who would! I've even considered a bike project myself, but it's an expensive hobby. (& I haven't got a license).

I shall have to find out more one day, I don't have a bike licence and would not know what to do with one really, they have strange gears on them. Anyway this ones heading off topic so I will steer it back round to getting the lister sorted.

Should have some time this weekend to play, the mags going back on, as is the petrol tank and I am going to get some exercise. I had forgotten just how much effort is needed against compression. It used to be my job as an apprentice to start a standby genny up, that had a three cyl Petter diesel I think, being the apprentice no one told me about de compressors!!....I did get my own back.

Looking forward to this weekend.

Another Lister D Empty It runs....

Post by biomed32uk Sat Mar 16 2013, 18:30

Well, put it back together this afternoon, timed it up and filled it up with some fresh petrol. 2 winds later and I could feel its getting easier to turn, cough chug and shes away !!.

The video is not very good, and the first part of the video there is a sheet hanging over the exhaust trapping the smoke, it quietened it down a bit.

Run for a good half hour or so quite sweetly. Seems fairly loud on the exhaust, I have good neighbours and don't want to upset them, what is the quieter exhaust on the D, as there are two types.

But I have my play thing while I get on with the other one.
