Lister D Lucas Mag
Hi All
Hope everyone is doing very well.
I need some help on a Lucas mag for a Lister D Engine.
When you turn the mag and touch the wire it will give you a little shock.
When you apply a spark plug and turn it, you get no spark. I have tried many plugs so its not the plug.
Can someone also confirm a replacement part condensor for a Lucas mag.
Where I stay we have no Mag mechanic or people who works on these kind's of stuff.
Many thanks. Raymond.

Re: Lister D Lucas Mag
have you cleaned the points?
Have you checked the resistance of the coil with a multimeter?
There are people that work on mags I use matyn at vintage mags., do a search on here his details are there.

Re: Lister D Lucas Mag
Matt, Raymond's problem is his location as he's in South Africa.
Raymond I don't know the answer but it's common to have a mag spark at a plug but once you put the plug in the engine it won't spark due to the compression. So it's better to come to light now rather then later. I'd try giving the mag a clean up, remove the points and give them a good clean and file the contacts flat, refit and re-gap. What gap are you setting the plug at? maybe try it at 15thou see what happens then.

Re: Lister D Lucas Mag
You say that you only get a little shock when you touch it Raymond, try turning it in the correct direction with the HT lead just a few millimetres away from the magneto body and you should get a decent spark as it goes over the point of magnetic pull. If you haven't got a spark then I would suspect the coil is failing. To test using a plug make sure that you have the plug earthed otherwise it will not work!

Re: Lister D Lucas Mag
Hi matt, stu and pete.
Thank you for all the help and information.
I cleaned the point and adjusted the spark plug gap as required.
Battled with the timing and amount of feul into the carb, but she fired up.
I had her running for 15 min or so and sounds very good. I can now start restoring the old girl.
It is a 1952 Lister D and not in a good condition, but non the less she is running.
Best Regards
Raymond.

Re: Lister D Lucas Mag
great news Raymond, it's always a good feeling inside when you get them to start up.
Good luck with the resto and please keep us informed of how you get on.
