I've seen a few APR's on the forum - thanks for your inspiration to keep going on mine.
Have included a before and after shot of the Ruston Hornsby APR that was dispatched to Australia in 1928.

The most difficult repairs were frost damage to the head, the piston seized in the bore, one needle valve broken off in the carby and the pipe for the oiler was rusted out and seized. The muffler, oiler and magneto were missing and the petrol tank rusted out.
The muffler I bought from Frank Gelder in England, the magneto from ebay in the USA needing a service and clean up, and the oiler off ebay from Allan Williams in England who is retired but but was a mechanic with Ruston Hornsby during his working life. We made the new tank and soldered it up.

If anyone wants to see it running, I put up a YouTube: https://youtu.be/w79iiVLVLSA

Regards to all. Graeme

Ruston APR Just finished Empty My ruston AP6

Post by seniorengineers Sun Feb 10 2013, 09:37

Hi, You have done a fantastic job on this engine, well done! I am in the process of rebuilding my AP6 that is the same year as yours, 1928, luckily, I have no frost damage on mine, but i do have other issues that are being sorted as i speak here. I am in the prosess of major cleaning and paint stripping, and painting most parts ready for assembly that will be started in the next couple of weeks, I need to get gasket material and sealing ring for the liner, and i will be refurbishing the fuel tank in the next day or so as it's full of holes. good luck, cheers David.

Ruston APR Just finished Empty About your AP6

Post by glowes3 Sun Feb 10 2013, 10:16

I will look forward to seeing some pics of your AP6 David - they're my dad's favorite engine as his dad had one on the farm when he was a kid and the shearers always said it was the smoothest engine for running a shearing plant.
Dad's now 80 and I grabbed my first chance to buy an AP3 that I could afford. It came in many pieces and like yours, the cylinder needs relining in it. I'm looking for someone who can do it for me - the local guy can't do a bore that long with his machine. The conrod has a broken big end and replacements seem rare but I've found a lister rod that's just a bit shorter but has the right size big end. Will get a bearing made. I'm also missing all the insides of the carby so am going to try and find someone at a rally so I can measure the needle valve and weight and try and make one.
People on this forum have restored far worse so I find it inspiring to read other restoration stories. Are you thinking of showing any stages of your rebuild?
Regards Graeme

Well done Graeme another very well restored Ruston, you do a remarkable job to get what's scrap and manage to get them running again and you must search the internet for hours to find the missing parts. Is this the 2nd or 3rd Ruston you've restored now?

Stu.
