Wolseley WD8 running problems. Empty Wolseley WD8 running problems.

Post by Guest Mon Mar 26, 2012 4:26 am

Can any one tell me if I can get parts to overhaul the carb on my WD8? It starts and runs fine but it's running too rich or is there a way of turning the fuel down a bit. I've tried to alter the advance / retard on the mag, loosened the mag and tried turning that to see if it would help, tried turning the knob all the way, both forward and back but it's still putting out black smoke and it's quite a crack when it fires.

Any suggestions greatly received,

Stu.

Is the choke lever pushed right in towards the engine when running Stu, or has the jet either come loose in its holder or the whole assembly has loosened off and unscrewed from the carb body? Or is the float clipped into the groove on the needle properly?

Pete.

Yes Pete the choke is fine, I'm not sure about anything else as I've had it all stripped, cleaned and rebuilt so I'll take the carb back off and check what you've suggested just in case something is not right but there's not a lot in the carb to go wrong.

have you got the float in the right grove position ???
and is the choker lever moving the butterfly out of the air stream fully

I bought the engine as a none runner, it did have a vacuum pump fitted that made a lot of noise so that maybe covered up the engine noise. As for the governer I've neverr touched it, the governer is working.
Think I need to dig abit deeper and see what I can find.

Kev the trolley was made as small as I could so it will fit in the back of the car, that why it has small wheels fitted. I can get you the measurements but it was mainly guess work.

Perhaps you need to have another look at the gap between the governor arm and the end of the governor push rod . I have no doubt the governor is working, but to me it is not working correctly.

I think that with the speed control knob fully unwound the screw at the fork end should just be touching the little pushrod Stu, pretty sure that was how I set mine up.

Or you can set it up with the engine running and the side plate off.

Thanks very much for all the help guys, I'm busy the next few days but first chance I get I'll have a look. I also have a spare carb on my WD2 I might give it a clean and swap it over see how it runs with that on.

Also make sure that the anti-flashback gauze in the carb breather hole isn't blocked with congealed oil Stu.

Well I had a few hours to spare so decided to see what I could sort out. Stripped the carb and found the needle on the float wasn't seating correctly, cleaned it up and found it to be better. Took the side cover off but couldn't find the small push rod you were talking about so thought I'd start it and see if I could do it while it was running. Started it up it ran spot on so it must have just been the float needle, thanks everyone for your help and advice. Ran it for an hour and it runs well no strange noise now like it hand and the black smoke has gone. Very Happy

I'll take some more pics once I get it all finished and cleaned up and another video of it running now.

Stu.

there you go then stu
simple as that my wd11 did it to me i stripped the carb cleaned it an then fired it up and petrol started to overflow slowly and that smoky effect
as it turned out the wire clip on the float had broken off , then i used a O ring just to try it before soldering and it was solved, its so easy for the needle to move on the float if the little wire is losing its grip on the needle

Mike thinking about it it's logical but it was the noise that got me it must have been some explosion due to it over fueling to make that noise. I do like a challenge and normally I'd just sit and work through everything but just not seeing straight at the minute, think it's the meds or stress that's doing my head in. Well it's running now so that's the main thing.
