Fire extinguishers yes or no?
I managed to pick these up off ebay a few days ago there local and £1.20 the pair to use as water tanks for either an engine or a pump.
What I also saw was one of these with it being polished would make a good looking tank if it matched in with the engine or pump. I missed the end of the auction and it went for £6 it was also local.
So what do you think could it be used to enhance your display or not?

The tank on my wolseley wd8 is ex extinguisher, I think it complements it quite well. I plan on doing something similar with my AV1 with a different type of extinguisher too. I have also cut the top off one and made it into a tank for a H1 pump in the past.
I think it's a great way to recycle these tanks and they don't look too out of place either!

There the right size for the amount of water you'd need in the smaller water cooled engines and can be made to look good.

Re: Fire extinguishers yes or no?
I had a couple of old water extinguishers saved from our caravan club and I kept them to make cooling tanks with, they would have worked well for small Stuarts and the like but I passed them on without actually trying them myself! A lot of the water filled ones are badly pitted inside so dangerous to use as actual extinguishers because they can explode under pressure, I took mine to our local Fire Station for inspection and the Fire Officer reckoned they were more lethal to the user than the actual fire!!

Working in a scrap yard one of our customers is an extinguisher servicer and as such manages to get hold of old copper ones for us they make ideal water tanks for pumps and engines and when cleaned up look the dogs danglies, the pick below is the one i had on my H2, got one left in the shed that i need to find a job for lol

What pressure are they. It would make a good air brush tank

As I said they said they are normally too pitted to risk putting pressure in them, though the stainless ones might be OK.

Re: Fire extinguishers yes or no?
What pressure does an air brush run at is it about 40psi? You could unscrew the top and have a look in with a tourch see how bad it was, I'm sure it would be ok for an air brush set up.
Abes you lucky bugger, them old copper tanks are spot on for use on a Stuart, have you any idea what you'd pay on ebay for one? I know I could find a use for a few copper tanks. I think for what you pick up at work you could work there for what you could find

All the water filled extinguishers I've dealt with have a plastic coating on the inside. Theres little chance the water will rust through that.

But they do, the fire officer peeled the plastic back from the top filler neck and it was badly rust pitted behind it. He reckoned that they go off like a small bomb with shrapnel flying around! When I stripped it all off to make the cooling tank I was surprised how bad it was, I guess the plastic coating was split letting water in which then remained trapped?

Re: Fire extinguishers yes or no?
It must be good having a scrap yard for all those little gens that come along, problem being if I owned one I'd need a few barns to keep all the good stuff that might come in handy one day. Yes I'm a hoarder
The thing is rust can get anywhere if it has a chance and if the plastic liners are not fully seal (air tight) the rust will get in, it might be a slow process but it's still there.
