Lauson Open Crank Restoration
Hello all
Yesterday i decided it was time to restore the lauson. The engine is going to have a full de coking internally and then be painted.
I have found patches of orignal paint under the emulsion type paint that was slapped on top of it whilst it was in the states. i have matched this to a craftmasters paint which matches the original very well.
The engine is now in bits completely.
The engine now needs the paint stripping off of it all. The nuts and bolts have all been cleaned and polished, they will now require a coat of boiled linseed oil.
I will post up more photos tommorrow.
Many Thanks Lewis

They will have a coat of linseed oil to protect the heads from rusting.
And to keep them shiney. I could also use a clear laquer.
Many thanks Lewis

Wow another interesting project Lewis and I thought you would have wanted to finish the other engine first.
Good luck and hope it all goes well with no nasty finds.

I have started this project for something to do in the evenings when it's too dark to do the turner. The turner is very near on completing. Lewis

Hello All
I Have cleaned the engine paintwork off today. There was a big surprise when i uncovered a lot of original paint.
I then cleaned the bottom mounting base unfortuantly no original paint on there only thick mud that had been painted over.
Heres the nuts and bolts that i have polished up and are now coated in boiled linseed oil to stop them rusting.
The smaller parts shall all sand blasted.

I have Photographed everything as ive took it apart. The timing, bearing caps etc. I also write alot of things down on the shed walls that way i can never lose the paperwork.
I also mark all the bearing caps etc with a punch and mark all the shims where they have come from.
Many Thanks Lewis

The engine will be painted as the other parts have no original paint on them. If it was all original I wouldn't have painted it. But it's going to be painted now.
I got it from a company that imports tractors and engines once a year from the states. I've had it for 7 months now And rallied it the end of the season last year.

Re: Lauson Open Crank Restoration
Hello
The last couple days the weather has warmed up and has been ideal for painting. so i have been putting the primer on the engine. 2 coats of primer have been applied to the engine. The engine has been painted in craftmaster paint and i would highly recommend it.
The top coat was then painted tonight. Pictures to come Later.
Many Thanks Lewis

Re: Lauson Open Crank Restoration
Nice paint job Lewis, just a bit of a shock that you've gone for everything black. Will you be cleaning off and polishing the brass parts or leaving it as it is now.

Re: Lauson Open Crank Restoration
The colour is favourite green not black, the pictures don't do it any justice they aren't very good. The paint is green with polished brass. I must agree does look black in the photos.
Many thanks Lewis

Re: Lauson Open Crank Restoration
It's green, phew, I thought it was odd sort of colour for you to be painting it, if I look close at the last pic I can see the green.
Nice one Lewis,

Re: Lauson Open Crank Restoration
You obviously didn't win that Alpha vacuum pump on ebay then Lewis, that would have looked good on there. They are a bit like rocking horse poo!
