Pipe work sizes.
I have been running engines alone but I have recently purchased a Stewart turner pump which needs a bit of restoration but turns freely so hopefully be able to run it soon. I have removed the pipe work from it as it is corroded. Can I use modern plumbing fittings to replace these. Will I be able to get correct sizes and threads to fit the casting inlet and outlet

Re: Pipe work sizes.
Once you know correct sizes get all your fittings off eBay, it's much cheaper than the DIY shops.
I've got a table somewhere which tells you how to measure the BSP threads. BSP 1 inch is not 1 inch diameter, it's about 1.25 inches, so it can get really awkward. If I find the link to the table I will post it up for you.
Matt's given you the size you need though, so that's a good start.
You can get all the reducers & bits & bobs on eBay though, just sort yourself out a list & go shopping on there. If you go to B&Q or Wickes, or anywhere like that it'll cost a small fortune.

Ok thanks I can get fittings through trade but wasn't sure of sizes so thanks for advice will check prices through eBay first though anything saved is a bonus.

or type in Google BES a mail order plumbing suppliers, there a spot on company delivery is quick but unless you got a few items the postage is around £7 for a small parcel so a few items it's worth it.

Re: Pipe work sizes.
It's up to you but it sometimes looks better if you use cast iron fittings on the pump rather then copper, it makes no difference to it's running it's just an age thing.

Good point Stu I would like things as authentic as possible so will source some cast iron fittings. I have a mate who is a pipe fitter I'm sure he would cut and thread any pipe work needed if I cross his palm with some silver.

Re: Pipe work sizes.
That sounds good if you can use just cast iron spot on, it's only the weight that will be a problem so maybe keep the pipe work as short as possible.

Re: Pipe work sizes.
Does look nice in cast iron. Your mate should be able to sort you out, but you can get the fittings for all that on eBay as well.
Also, you can easily paint the iron (well, they'll be steel these days) fittings to match the engine. I think I agree with Stu here, they do look more in keeping, but copper & brass can be polished up if you like your bling.

Re: Pipe work sizes.
They are not cast iron, they are Malleable iron fittings, unless you are going for 4inch soil pipe.
