Nice lamp collection there, all burning very bright. You should try and find a PL53, they are a nice thing to have. For camping I use a couple of Coleman lamps which are often the brightest thing on the campsite Very Happy I did use Tilleys but you have to cart round meths and the pre-lighter so the Colemans are handier burning straight away on Coleman fuel. I have a 500CP lamp I have yet to fire up, it should be blindingly bright compared to the 300 CP Tilleys.

Unfortunately I round the lamps seem to breed quicker than the engine collection as they are small and fairly cheap but if you end up buying one at every show and then the odd one on Ebay they soon add up ! Laughing

Coleman fuel don't you find that pretty expensive ? I use Aspen 4 which is much cheaper than the Coleman
fuel, work's well in petrol stoves as well.

Thanks Dave .

I do like the look of the PL's but its just looking out till find one at a good price ..

Al i remember you saying about the coleman fuel and i did see the fuel in go out doors and it was a tad exspensive compared to kerro . I bought some kerro from great Dorset last year and im still on that fuel .But i did buy a jerry can of it , so im set for a while .

Its just keeping your eye out around sales , rallys and ebay etc .

Like i just won some vapourizers on ebay . less than £12 there around £25 for 1 new one . so il have some spares one plus the old ones are far better than the new type as the new ones burn very dim.

Just picked up what at first glance looks like your average post 60's Tilley storm lamp, on closer inspection the spigot for the mantle is around twice the length of a standard one, and the burner arrangement is slightly different as well as the pump handle, having spoken to tilley uk they say it may be a 500 cp lamp which they stock mantles for but not online, but they are a bit confused by other things and the burner suggests pre 60's, so they requested I send some photos by email waiting for a response Smile
Here are the pics I have sent them:

yeah, that's it, was going to get her going then flog on, but think as its older and high output I'll keep it. Had a quick look in the tank, there is an odd smell of "very old PETROL" yes petrol!!!!!!!!!! and some weird crystal formations in there so will need a good flush, will get my work laptop out with the endoscope to get some pic's inside the tank, the pick up looks to be too high also.

Decided as half the paint was missing, its going back to brass Smile

It looks better in the photo, still spots of paint to come off and the brass needs a lot more work Smile

well, it was at a funny angle and too far off the bottom when I peeked in yesterday so needed looking at, I can only guess it was loose and fell out while the I was working on it. Bit of a bugger but I'll sort it Smile

Well I've only got 1 and that's all I need. Thing is now how the hell do I start it Laughing Laughing Laughing Years ago my dad had one and he used to soak the wick (if it's called that, it's the bit you light) in meths until it heated something else up then after about 5 minutes he turned the valve and it lit ok so what is the correct thing to do, I know I pump it 10 times to start with but when else do I pump it?

Matt with 6 the same it might be worth selling a few to get an older more rare lamp.

Stu.

tube now sorted, will add pics to this post later, off to play d types with ed Smile

OK here goes, first I flushed the fitting hole with flux,

next I cleaned the tube, leaving the tip to be soldered back in tinned, then wound a few turns of solder around the tube just above where the joint was to be made and dipped it in flux:

next was a serious bit of jiggery pokery, my "cunning plan" I held the tank upside down and inserted a bright led on thin wire for light, then using forceps I held the tube inline with them so they went in the filler hole, then pulled back so the tube moved into the right possition in the jaws, next I carefully put the tube in place no mean feat with my shaky hands lol. Once in place I rested the tank still upside down between the open jaws of my vice and applied the blowtorch to the fitting from the outside until the solder ran.
All in all it worked Smile although there is so much gunk in there still to clean my shiney tube is now dirty again lol, last photo from my endoscope:

Makes me wonder but this may have been the reason for the lamp being at the tip Smile
