Alternator on Petter A1

Post by blackvanman on Tue Apr 16 2013, 20:41

Not really a new project,
http://www.stationaryengineforum.net/t5236-another-petter-a1?highlight=another+petter+a1

But added an alternator today Smile
Most know I use a scooter at rallies, basically because I have not a lot of cartilage in my ankle joint and although I am a fidget arris (can't keep still, have to be doing something) can't walk far without loads of pain, so the scooter is my saving grace, give in and play dead or balls to it, find a way, the latter is my choice Smile
Only problem with scooters is they have these annoying things called batteries that make them go, a big problem in a field for 3-5 days at a rally. The idea is that all the time I am with the engine during the day I can plug the scooter charger into an inverter powered by a car battery that will be charged by this alternator, that way provided the A1 doesn't let me down scooter battery range shouldn't be an issue Very Happy

Fabricated a bracket, slapped it all together with the wiring loosely rigged and fired her up:

Next job is to wire it properly and mount the Ammeter, it will be set up so the battery will be in a slightly separate place but more on that later Wink

A very good idea Andy, just wondering what difference it would make if the battery voltage was low, can you tell the engine is under more of a load if so what's it like. Hope you understand the question Laughing Laughing Laughing

I bought a Petter A1 with the idea of putting an alternator on it for similar reasons plus Winter lightups, however I now appear to have mislaid the alternator that I had for it so that is on hold for a while at least. Maybe it will reappear in the Autumn? Laughing

Are you thinning out Pete or just selling the odd engine to make room for new engines to arrive. Very Happy

Running out of room rapidly Stu! There may be another D type coming my way shortly so unless I find somewhere to stack them all a few will have to fly the nest! Sad That will come hard, deciding what has to go will be the problem as some dont run as well as I would like and I cant sell an engine that isn't in good order, I may decide to just rid a few aircooled's! Wink

That's not a good thing to have to do Pete but when needs must you'll just have to find good homes for them.

I'm seriously thinking about letting some of mine go. I think it will be the Lister G first as it's getting too much for me to move now. I't such a smame as it's a great running engine, it can stand all winter then turn on the petrol tap and one good swing and away she goes. I'm like you I don't want to sell any engines as non runners or if they have a fault on them. I always promised myself that I would rally every engine that I get up and running correctly. The Lister J I have has never been rallied for a lot of years so I'd like to get that sorted and rallied a few times before I think about selling it.

Lol Andy,

What you need is a lister powered lazyboy! Keeps with the engine theme and keeps you mobile.
I'm thinking of making a cart to hold at least two engines, but driven by a small stationary engine (IHC) with the tranny of a riding mower.
That may just keep me from hurting myself lol.

John.

John an IHC engine is to valuable to use on a cart can you could pick up a CAT or Cummins engine for it then you should have enough power with some to spare. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
