shell petrol can restoration Empty shell petrol can restoration

Post by callum12 Sun Oct 13 2013, 17:11

Hi all,
I picked a a petrol can from the grand buckinghamshire steam rally a fair few months ago. I believe that is is 1920's ish. as i found a similar now that was defiantly 1920's; but i haven't found on thats identical. at GDSF i picked up a spout a really nicely polished cap for it cost me £25 all in all. I also picked up two cast brass Lister plaques they where £9 each. very nice though.
anyway here are some pictures of the restoration.

^ the petrol can cost me £10. it still had something like TVO in it so the inside was in perfect condition.

^ here it is in grey primer. i used hammerite for this.
shell petrol can restoration Petrolcanblackcoat_zpsec3d4c41

^ heres the can with all of the black paint finished i did 6 super thin coats of halfords satin black. i chose satin as gloss would show up any imperfections and would be hard to paint all of the details on.

^ here is is with all of the white details painted on. I used humbrol matt white enamel paint for this.

shell petrol can restoration Complete_zps50eb6464

^ and finally here it is all complete. i think it looks really good, if i do say so my self. I will be using the can at rallies to fill up the lister d.

I hope this is interesting,

looks good, most of these cans have the date on the bottom, normally a month and year in 3 digit form.

No need for petrol proof lacquer if you leave it a month for the paint to harden off, it will stay on the can, use it before then and it will peel off though.

please do put up some pics lewis, it will be nice to see how mine compares against others.Very Happy The only text on the bottom of the can is a Valour number.
don't worry the can has been finished for some time now. and it won't be used until my lister is finished. It should be well hardened by the time i'm ready to use it.
i've been told that the spout is fairly rare, does anybody now how rare? i haven't seen many, if any.
thanks for all the positive comments, i may do another soon.

The Valor number should be the date Callum.  Got a few myself somewhere, though I weighed the bad ones in a while ago as they were beyond all hope!  Saved the caps though.Smile

I took a Fillacan (Eversure I think?) to the scrappy about a month ago, I remember buying it new in the 1960's!  Got a couple of the Valor Parrafin cans as well, didn't think that anyone would find them collectable?Shocked   Most of my two gallon cans came via ebay a few years ago, there was a guy in the next town selling six for £5 buy it now so I took a chance and three were useable and didn't leak.  Haven't got any one gallon ones, they are rarer and make decent money.  Dont want any more, they take up valuable engine space!!!Smile

Pete.

That's a nice job you did on the can, that's a hard enough can to get I have been collecting for a long time now and only got that type of Shell can fairly lately, as for the spout they seem to be impossible to get now I haven't seen one for sale over here for about ten years the last one I got was in England.

I had one of the flexible spouts for a 2 gallon can for sale early in the year on ebay, no one wanted it so I kept it.
