another Lister D fires up

Post by mm5aho on Wed May 22 2013, 21:08

I'm chuffed.
My second Lister D assembled last night, and fired up on second crank.
I'd adapted a Wico magneto, but otherwise most parts were either original or robbed off #3, which is still in the queue.
The Wico came with a different size sprocket, so I took a sprocket off a Lucas, welded the centre hole closed, drilled it out again at the smaller diameter for the Wico, and fitted that. Its a bit wonky, as I didn't get the hole quite square, but it works.
Made a muffler from some steel box section, so it has a unique rectangular muffler, but very effective.

It chuffed away nicely, better than #1, warmed up the hopperful of water. Took a little adjusting the re-made governor linkage setup (home made, and uses an old spring from my junk box), the carb was a real mess, but that all came good and worked fine.
Pix later.

Oh and this one I painted Lister Green, just to be different from the blue one!

Only one thing I did wrong.
I forgot the gib key. Flywheel came loose on initial backfire, gave me a fright!

#3 will be much more of a challenge. No carb, no tank, no linkages, bits missing all over. And very rusty. Might have to shotblast it clean I think, after a strip down.

Hmm, I think he might be a bit far, but bits can be posted.

There's plenty of bits for these knocking about, & there's plenty of helpful members on here too (as the above post shows  ), so you will have that third Lister D running. Very Happy

Thanks for encouraging thoughts and ideas.
I had a thought to buy a sheet of galvanized steel and make up a couple of fuel tanks. With three Lister Ds, I have one good, and one quite rusty fuel tanks. I cleaned out the rusty one to get #2 going, but its in poor shape. Doesn't look that much to making new ones. Cut shape and solder. Getting the fittings (outlet and cap) to look near to original might be the hardest part.
Might be a way of taking rusted out tanks and saving the brassware for a new?
Some parts are more easily made from scratch than others. Making governor linkages not too bad, but be quite a job to make a carb from scratch!

I made my own gaskets for this one, using a bought set as template, and gasket materials (Ebay) cut out new sets. A new oiler splash guard (that thing in the sump) wasn't too bad either.
Sometimes I'm amazed at the prices some bits ell for. Saw some tank straps sell for £25 a set. Two strips of sheetmetal, take about 30 mins to make.

I mounted #2 on a steel trolley, with the home made wheels I mentioned in an earlier post. Works fine.

Great work Geoff, you are sure getting to know your way around a Lister D. I know where your coming from regarding parts and prices, you say about the tank straps well the same goes for the mag chain cover they can go for silly money and there very easy to make.

Stu.
