HELP! Lister DK Empty HELP! Lister DK

Hi all, I need your help! Over the last 2 years I have been restoring a Lister DK, its the first engine I have restored and all was going well until I painted it recently. I have reinstalled all the parts but it no longer wants to run. It was running before painting so know it should work. I think its a problem with the spark as sometimes its strong and other times weak. I've cleaned the points and set them, I've fitted a new condenser, I've tried 3 different plugs but still wont run. the coil I think is the problem as it has had some repairs done to it. I have had it running but only for a couple of minutes then it dies, think the coil is breaking down. I really need some help as it is due to go to Henham Steam Rally in 3 weeks! Mad

SR1 or RS1 mag? If it's the SR! then defo the coil, if the RS1 then might be. Have you painted the top of the mag bracket?

If you have a multimeter set it to ohms 1000's if it has various ranges and connect one end to where the HT lead connects on the coil and the other to earth (body of magneto). You need a reading of 3500ohms minimum, more like 4-6000 ohms to be good. If you get no reading the secondary coil has gone open circuit and you need a replacement. If you have a Wico A series magneto kicking about again check the coil resistance and if OK this can be made to fit either the RS or SR magneto. You can get a weak mag to work by closing the gap of the spark plug to a minimum gap of a few thou only. This may work for a while but ultimately if the coil windings have broken down, it will fail.
