Arrival of my new Lister D! (Rather picture heavy)

So we got my Lister D home today. What an effort that was! I could have put it into the back of my car, BUT its on lowered suspension and i didnt fancy rubbing away my arches anymore! So we decided to make up a little temporary trolley for it. Then used sofa casters for the wheels. Which worked, to a point, about one road away from pushing it to my house, one of the things fell off! Nevermind though, finally got it back! Oh and since i had everything except the crankcase and flywheel, i painted the crankcase door and oil cap, and also refurbished the carb!

lister d's have to be the most awkward things to move around I have lost count of the amount of straining I have done to shift mine about,  - looks a good engine.

They are so heavy on the flywheel side and it kept nearly tipping when it hit a stone haha. Thanks!

So i have some good news, and some bad. The crankcase is now clean inside! However, the port for the tap to drain the water jacket. The previous owner bunged this up with something, i have no idea if its just a bung or a threaded bolt. But the things stuck in well and rounded. 

have you tried to remove the larger stopper? - the bolt thing might need drilling out.

No I havent. If I can find something big enough to take it out il have a go. Cheers!

I have a lister and someone has screwed a piece of threaded pipe into it - I have yet to get it out as I want to replace it with a brass tap -

Whatever it is that's in there, the hole should be threaded, so I would (if it were mine) attempt to unscrew it, perhaps with a pair of mole grips or something. If it snaps off then you will probably have to drill it out, but I wouldn't go straight at it with a drill before exhausting all other avenues.

Apart from that all looks well. Nice job on the painting .

I've tried mole grips on it, just ends up tearing away material and coming loose. I tried a dremel to grind some flats for a spanner, again just stripped. I tried heating it up and quenching it to no avail. Stuck on one silly bolt haha. Thanks!

Any idea what the bolt is made of??? Could it be welded on to?

Might be a good idea to heat the metal around it, rather than the bolt itself, then get some penetrating oil in there, repeat a few times, trying to shift it each time. I wouldn't quench it, let the heat do it's thing.

Might be worth removing the plug, as Steve said, maybe then you could hold the bolt in a vice (really hard) & get a spanner on the plug part & move it like that.

Other than that I dunno. Could perhaps chop it off flush, drill it & tap it, then put a brass screw in plug (bolt with a fibre washer) in there until you can find a brass tap to go in.

Or, if it's made of soft material you might be able to drill it & get it out once it's almost drilled out to the threads (that's if the threads are still there).

Or, if the worst came to the worst, I bet you'd find another one of those cast iron plugs with the hole drilled & tapped in it. There are quite a lot of spares around for these engines.


Just out of interest, how far did you transport this engine on your makeshift trolley??? Did you get a few funny looks on the way??? (I've got a picture in my mind & it's making me smile ).

Im pretty sure its just made from steel. So yeah it could do, im going to have a go at that tomorrow, couldnt be bothered to get the mig out of the pit in the garage after a day at work.
Yeah il probably just look for another plug. Although that plug seems to be stuck pretty tight too! Nevermind im sure it will come out one day. 
Even if the threads are damaged, i can always drill and tap it a size bigger, and fit a helicoil into it to reduce it back to its original thread size. 

Oh my days, what a bit of fun that was. Two of us had to walk it home, cross a main road and wheel it over those little bumpy bits at the crossing. Then when the wheel fell off, one of us had to sort of use it as a scooter to put weight on the back wheels, lifting the front corner up. It was so much fun! And you bet we got some funny looks haha!

Sounds like great fun. Who cares who's looking, maybe it brightened someone's day up? Who knows. 

Just out of interest, what is the car with the lowered springs? Most of my model of cars are lowered these days (old BMW 5 series), but I won't do it to mine as it's too old & I need to use it too much (& tow a caravan every now & then). I've been told it's an easy lower though, with some spring compressors & an angle grinder you don't even need to take the springs out! Not so sure myself.

Its only a Corsa. Nothing special, im only 18 and insurance premiums for me on anything other than a 1 litre are out of the question, had to pay 2000 notes just for that :/. 

And yes, the quote system has gone funny for me too haha!
