Lister D, First Engine Restoration (Hopefully)

Lesson #1, try to buy engines on trolleys, I suspect it makes life easier:roll:

Anyway, I recently bought my first stationary engine, a Lister D.  And have the intention of restoring it.  What was going to be a quick look, maybe change to HT lead turned into a quite extensive strip down.  I got a bit carried away.

So the only nasty surprise was the big end bearing, which has definitely seen better days.  The pulley didn't want to come off the shaft either but that wasn't totally unexpected.  Other than that I didn't see any major problems.

Time to order some parts, maybe think about a trolley too.  I'll try to keep this up to date as I manage to get work done.

hi, my bearing looked the same ....well minced, i bought replacement from stationary engine parts, the new one did not match the old one when it came to the holes..i put some pics on my thread, my solution was to turn new bearing 45 degrees and drill new ones, i pre drilled the oil finger hole...fitted the new bearing to conrod setting the hole in correct place and bearing offset, i drilled the 2 oil holes after it was in place and all is good...hope this helps as i spent some time trying to sort

Looking good Joe. Aren't you in the South East??? I've got a feeling I commented on your welcome thread & I think I saw that engine for sale locally.

Anyway, it's coming along nicely by the looks & seems to be in relatively good condition, all things considered.

Will be watching with interest as I bought my nephews a Lister D for christmas, it's in much worse condition than yours is. We've barely started it & they keep on asking me when we're going to get it done. I can't put it off for ever.

A trolley will improve the situation 100%, these engines aren't just bloody heavy, they're also bloody awkward to handle as well! 

Glad to hear you got yours sorted Paul, I've ordered the bush so we'll see how that goes:roll:  Next, and I think last on the list for dis-assembly is getting the pulley and flywheel off the end of the crank:scratch:  Seem to be having trouble finding your thread as well?

I am indeed Nutts, I'm in Shoreham, but I get over towards you (Seaford) quite regularly.  I'll try and search you out at Wiston (I should make it).

Yeah, I'm quite pleased with the progress so far, and that there weren't more parts showing wear.  That being said I'm yet to have a look at the cylinder head.

Tell me about it, it wasn't too bad collecting it with the help of a mate, but moving it across the garage on my own when it was complete was a right a*$£.  Short of taking the bits off the crank I think that's made it to the top of the list.

i could not get my flywheel to budge either so i did as the guys here advised and left it on...as you can remove crank ok with it on.

It's bloody heavy though, the crank with flywheel, crank shaft & bearing casing still intact. If you do do it that way be prepared for a heavy lump of metal to come off.

Think I will end up doing that on my nephews one.

I'd already whipped the crank assembly out of the case complete, it was very heavy.  I can see why you might leave it all together, the head had been pre snapped off my gib key and it was some effort to get everything apart.

However both pulley and flywheel are off the crank now, I'll get some pictures and post them up soon.

Got hold of some wood (Iroko) to build a trolley out of, so hopefully that will be done relatively soon, just need to find some wheels.  In the meantime I'm planning on getting the crankcase cleaned up, painted, and ready to mount.

A little bit more progress over the last couple of days, I've now disassembled the crank.  I was going to leave it all together but I'm quite glad I didn't, the bearings have seen better days.

I've also started cleaning the paint off the crankcase, hopefully it won't be too long before I can get it cleaned up and start painting that bit.

Looking really good. You'll be glad of those pics when it comes time to reassemble. Only yesterday I had to look through an album to see which way round a sprocket went on my Lister A.

Work continues apace...

Crankcase has been stripped, bore deglazed, and had a new drain tap boss fitted.  And tonight has had a first coat of paint.

Crank bearing carrier has been cleaned, had a couple of coats of paint and had the smaller bearing fitted

I've also been working on a trolley (it was on a couple of rotten sticks when I got it), this is what it looks like so far...

I've found one pair of wheels that's relatively large, so now I just need to find a couple of smaller wheels for the steering axle.

Well, there's been a little bit more progress, I've found and collected another set of wheels.  Started painting the valve gear assembly and started giving the head some attention, which turned out to be interesting :roll:Ignoring the decidedly sloppy (and oval) valve guides, the head has obviously been off in the past, but the washers weren't returned to below the brass nuts, which had been over tightened  This meant that both the brass nuts and the iron of the head were belled out.  After some time with a (stupidly) long slot drill and a bit of effort on the lathe I have flat faces in the head, flat nuts and new iron valve guides.  Now to make some new spring seats

looking good....i restored a listyer last summer took me about 3 month on and off but totally worth it at the end was a very proud owner on the rally field last wkend

Thanks Lau, is that the one that's in your shearer thread?  I had a read of that recently, it looks like it turned out really well!

Some more progress.  Made new spring seats and washers for under the head nuts, valves lapped in and reassembled.  Head has just had its first coat of paint.  I'll try and take a couple of pics when I get a chance...

Had some more time in the garage last night, very nearly there now.  Just waiting for a fuel cock to turn up then I can make a fuel pipe.  Leave the paint to harden for a bit then a coat of varnish to protect everything.  Anyway, currently look slike this...
