Help please, Wolseley WD8 erratic running under no load
I've recently completed my first engine restoration (a WD8) and although it runs well under load I could do with some advice as it doesn't run so well under no load conditions (see video), other WD's under no load in YouTube videos seem to be running quite well - quite even. I assume I need some choke under no load conditions (lever vertical), I've tried that but that speeds the engine up to the point that it starts jumping about a bit too much, I assume I have two issues - one being the governor and the other that I need some choke or am I barking up the wrong tree, am I missing some trick or two ?
NB: There is some movement (adjustment) available in the mag mounting, is the static timing critical with this, mine is set about mid way between the limits of adjustment which means its firing at or very close to TDC, whats the effect of float height on these engines, I assume that also changes the mixture.
Any constructive advice much appreciated as I'm rather new to Stationary Engines, thanks. DC

in my opinion in the video it runs like a typical wolselley same as mine but have to have it a notch or two on choke , The guvnor may be worth checking .

they do have the odd dip when running with no load, all 7 of mine have done it a bit, some of them do seem to run a bit fast, my red one does and adjusting the governor doest seem to make much difference

If they runs a bit fast its normally because its a 900rpm model, only way to back them down it to drill a new split pin hole closer to the end of the govenor adjustment screw inside the valve cover plate worked a treat o mine

Not being funny Dan but how can it be a engine running fast be fuel starvation? If was starvation engine would be hunting up and down.. Quite a few engine manufacures recommend if a engine wasn't on load to turn the choke on slightly and reduce the fuel if possible.

Re: Help please, Wolseley WD8 erratic running under no load
timing sounds a tad late to me, the impulse should go off just as the crankshaft keyway is at the bottom
