Just brought another Ruston 6PB. Going to do the old oily rag treatment.

Whats best to use? Boiled Linseed Oil and white sprite? Diesel? or old engine oil?

this sounds like one for the others like billpearves with his almost shiny bare metal wolseley , and the others ive forgoten about what is oiled ect ect
id like to here about this way too as my next is going to be old natuaral but with the rust slowing coatings on

Ollie, as you have already mentioned boiled linseed oil then you have already read the threads on its finish, so I would say definatley linseed oil , but I am surprised no one has mentioned fuel proof aerosol laquer yet !! I reckon that would leave a nice sheen and a lot less hassle, just a thought.

Boiled linseed oil mixed 50:50 with White spirit, brush it on, not a rag as that leaves "Fluff" and then leave it for about 2 months to dry.

Aerosol lacquer, not a bad idea Janner, if I was into leaving engines "rusty" I might give that a go, but I'm not so I'm not going to.

I remember years back talking about varnish on bright parts of engines, flywheel faces, side shafts and the like and the problem with that was if there was a sharp edge then you got moisture ingress on the corner and the rust then came back from under the varnish, thus the need for linseed oil as that doesn't "set" as such.

Found a another problem, this PB is fitted with a 3/4 90 degree bend on the spark plug, its got a lot of pin holes, would quick steel or JB weld be okay to patch it up? Don't want something that's going to stand out.

Yes, I meant painted on. Unless you use a lint free rag.

Where? Spark plug? That is a 18mm bend, probably better off without it, not all PB Rustons have one, drain plug? Get a new one and screw in or take it out completely, exhaust? Should be 1 inch not 3/4.

Its pretty much welded itself into the head. So not sure what do about it, get it glowing hot then try to unscrew it with a monkey wrench?

Right, so it is the elbow in the head. Chances of finding an 18mm elbow are damn near Zero. If it has holes in it then what I would do is cut it off flush with the head then use a hack saw to slit the remains of the tread CAREFULLY so it can then be removed and a plug can be screwed straight into the head. All that elbow does is to help prevent plug fowling so for what you plan to do it shouldn't be much of a problem. If on the other hand the elbow is sound then leave it alone.

Been a couple of days, keep on going with it, Head came off and found water ports blocked up with rust, Hoppers half full of rust. The flywheels had to come off so I can get in the side and try to clean it out some more.

Next problem is its going to be left from today up until next Monday, as I have the Kent County Show this weekend, which is a Friday, Saturday, Sunday show and I'm also a steward there.

Done some cleaning and under the grease and muck is the original paint.
