Enfield governor spring re-tensioning

Post by janner on Mon Jul 08 2013, 16:19

Hi all, Been looking for a weaker spring for the enfield VS1 today to get the revs a tad lower with no luck , but was wondering if holding the spring in a vices nearly closed and then heating to cherry red will that be enough to soften the spring rate ?? I was thinking it would, but should I want to put it back to normal would it be a case of reversal then douching in oil to re temper ?? Cheers guys

If you heat it red hot it will stay in the position it was heated in, nearly closed. I would talk to a spring maker. I had some springs made for a clutch in a vintage car a while back. They ended up costing 3 or 4 dollars each. At that price I did not think it was worth messing around finding springs that as you say are not right.

Well !!!!!! IT WORKED bounce bounce bounce  Bloody delighted with it , video uploading as we type , you would not believe its the same engine , and I have made it so it can be wound back up for when loading it up , even got it stopping correctly in the shut off lever, runs off the governor now without holding it on the idle adjust lever...be back soon

Kev, it was the tension that was wrong plus the adjustments were way out too, they were probably right fr a genny set but no good for rallying !! yes well happy with it, don't see many of them on the field down here, will be making a trolley soon, do enjoy woodwork

Edit ! Don't see any down here.
