Smoking Petter M !!

Post by EarlBathurst on Wed Sep 18 2013, 20:19

Evening All,I've been busy on my Petter Appletop 3hp today having got the bore and rings sorted i turned my attention to the new white metal bearings, first i had them roughed out on a lathe then as we do on the steam loco's i blued and scraped them by hand, this is a long job! anyhow the re-assembly was straight forward enough, so next i started her up that was quite easy i must say for someone with no experience on these engines! anyhow after five mins i stopped it and had a look the bearings , all was fine so time for a longer run of half an hour, again, fine! the one issue i'm concerned about is the amount of smoke it pours from the exhaust! also when i whent to start it again the plug was so wet it had to b e changed.
Has anyone got any ideas on this please ??
many thanks,Karl.cheers

Could just be over oiling, how many drops are you set on per minutes? Are you just running on petrol? if you are running on 28sec or paraffin this will make them smoke as well. My 3hp appletop runs on a home mix of petrol/28sec and I set the oiler on that to about 12 drops per minute on SAE30 oil. You need some oil in the sump as this helps to lube the big end, sort of semi splash system on them, an oil filled exhaust shouldn't cause to many problems as this will help catch some of the oil that is in the exhaust gasses although to much oil in the bottle will make it smoke more.

9 times out of 10 it will be over oiling.

Cut and paste from over there.

Ditto,Hi, its running on straight petrol for now as i know that 'fin will make 'em smoke1
the oil is sae30, set at 10-12 drops per min, being as the bearings are new i filled the oil chambers to the brim, is this too high?
cheers, Karl.

If you filled the oil chamber on the oiler side to the brim then yes, this will cause over oiling as it will take all the extra oil into the crankcase and out the exhaust pot.

Just give it a long run, it will burn off the excess oil and should clean up. A load will help, or a rag on the flywheel.

If you look here...

At the beginning I have a small rag folded up and am just bearing onto the flywheel to help set the mix screw so it 2 strokes properly, then I just leave it to it.
