My First Lister
Well I have just taken delivery of my first Lister - an A29 Spec.
And I'm already beginning to panic!! What a mess!!
Its seized solid - take a look at the photos - especially inside the crankcase - I'm wondering if I've bitten off more than I can chew - still - I am a persistent bugger - so I'm thinking if I take my time, and attack it with lots of oil and lots of patience, I may be able to save another old beast from the scrap yard.
The guy I got it off said he hoisted it onto the trailer with the sling wrapped around the hopper and lifted it by the hopper - ie: all the weight was supported by the piston stuck in the barrel, and you'll notice there are not nuts holding the hopper onto the crank case - that doesn't sound promising!!
At this point I have done nothing to it except look and take photos.
I think my first job is probably to get the piston free and get the head/hopper off - and I may just take off the fuel pump to amuse myself while I'm waiting for the oil to work its magic in the barrel.
Thoughts?? Please don't say throw it away!!
Notice the Hopper Lid - I've never seen one of those before.
You can see all the photos here:

It looks rough doesn't it? I can assure you the photos make it look a lot better than it is.....
I think that is what's left of an oil ring sitting in the bottom of the crankcase....oh dear - why do we do it??

NO! don't throw it away. Its missing a few parts, most noticibally the carb and the mag which would probably be a Lucus RS1 seen as it has the lid. but still don't throw it away as it would make a nice project...

Re: My First Lister
Happiness is guaranteed my good man - when you eventually get it running
Well worth saving from the scrap heap - and like you I have never seen a hopper lid either - nice bonus find!
Enjoy the summer months restoring it!
Good luck

Re: My First Lister
OK!! You all talked me into it - I'll keep it and have a go at getting it going again :)I've got the bore full of old oil and its soaking now, but I will be really surprised if I can free the piston up again - but that won't stop me giving it a good try!!
I know its a bit early for this, but what is the best way to free the piston up after its been soaking for a month or two??
I can't apply any pressure directly to the piston - ie: no wacking it with a piece of wood, (cause the head doesn't come off), although perhaps from the bottom? but there's not much room/angle to work with.
Can't go in through the plug hole....
About the only think I can think of if be using a long lever on the flywheels - is this the recommended method? I wouldn't have thought so, but what choice do I have??
What do you guys suggest??
And, no, the engines in the background of those photos are not mine - they were taken while it was still at the previous owners farm.

Re: My First Lister
As said ditch the oil and go for diesel, you have to tip on its side to tip out, and take crankcase door off and soak everything with diesel plenty off it, try to get the big end bearing cap off too as may not be sized on mains just in the bore.
How I did mine once got crank to turn using peice of timber lashed to flywheel was to rock the crank needed heat as well, once went pushed conrod up pushing cylinder off. Assuming the piston not at tdc! Then i put nuts on studs right to bottom and cut small pieces of tube to fit over studs wind nuts up to jack cylinder off piston but may need to heat cylinder wall. As you go may need longer prices of tube. Once got tension turn each nut a flat or 2 at a time.
