Hi everyone. Im fairly new to the stationary engines, but so far I'm enjoying every minute of working on them (except when they refuse to co-operate Wink ).

I bought these two engines on eBay in autumn last year, thinking they were both Mk 40's. I planned to make one functioning engine out of two non-functioning engines.

However, the first one arrived and it wasn't what the seller had advertised. Unfortunately, it was also somewhat damaged in transit. One of the feet on the oil sump had smashed off, the inlet manifold had snapped, the air filter had been crushed and I recently discovered that the crankcase had been pretty much shattered too.

I have put the Mk 40 HS in the garage for now to work on in a few months or so, but the Mk 20 is coming along brilliantly! It's fully dismantled, cleaned and all of the spare parts have been ordered and should be arriving on Monday. Got to send a few parts off to be sand blasted too, but they should be back by Tuesday.

I shall post a few pictures of my progress in the next few days, and I will keep this updated as I finish the build and start on the bigger task of the Mk 40 HS!

Sound like you got too great projects, sorry to hear that you got mislead by the seller and then found that one f the engine had broke during transit.

Yeah, I suppose it was a blessing in disguise, if I had two Mk 40's, I might not have decided to start collecting!

Tried to get the Mk 40 going today, so far, only limited success. Broke 3 fins on the flywheel/cylinder head, managed to get a spark, and broke the wire off the coil...

I'll try again later on! Smile

as i have worked on many villiers over the years and have shelves of saved good parts ,castings ect from the many unsalvagables
and the manuals arnt always clear to work from on some areas as i learned with expearence  Smile

Full on restoration I think. Definately for the Mk 20, had to replace loads.

Been tinkering with the Mk 40 today, and I nearly got it going, but I cant seem to get the fuel to go through the carb properly. It was firing when I was spraying fuel through the air intake, but it wouldn't go when the fuel was going through the carb as it should.

It's sparking really well now that I've cleaned the points, cleaned the coil connections and replaced the HT lead (that I completely broke).

Had the carb apart today, cleaned it all out, got the right setting for the needle and got the throttle and air intake open too.

Its the Zenith carb on, anyone have any ideas how to get it firing?

(I don't actually know if everything is there on the carb, I think it is though)

That will look very nice with a full restoration.
as for getting it going, try checking the timing. If you post a video of you trying to get it going I'm sure some one can give you hand.

Well, I neglected to check if the compression was there. Turns out there was absolutely none. So we took the head off and found the exhaust valve rusted open. Cleaned it up and got it moving again, put it back together and it started up first pull!

Just need to get this Mk 20 done and then I can do the restoration of the Mk 40! Smile

It is a great sense of achievement getting an engine, stripping it down, painting it and then putting it back together and starting it for the fitst time in many years!

Well, looks like the Mk 20 is going to be firing by the end of the day. Been working on it on Friday and Saturday night, and its pretty much there. My dad wont let me try to start it though without him there as he doesn't want me to hurt myself.

My original crankcase, with the deep canyon running through it.

Time to start putting stuff together!

It was at this stage that I went through about 6 hours of putting stuff together then taking it apart again when I forgot to put parts in that needed to go in first. I would have taken photos, but I was so frustrated that I probably would have ended up throwing my phone off a wall.

The results so far of all my pain and suffering. The engine as of Saturday night. Nothing painted yet, I want to make sure it actually works before I do the cosmetic stuff. You should be able to see the fab work the sandblasters did on the flywheel, cylinder and cylinder head. They look fresh out of the foundry!

that is looking good, do you know what colour it'll be painted in yet? I think a nice dark, high gloss paint would look good.

Thanks! I was thinking about going with the original green colour for the covers and fuel tank, black for the cylinder, cylinder head and fuel tank straps thenleave the crankcase and sump unpainted.

What do you think?

Wow, thats amazing! I think that is definately what I will be going for!

I have to ask though, what is that part with "VILLIERS VAPOURISER" on? I have never seen that before!

Im assuming the exhaust gases heat up the fuel/air mix as its heading into the combustion chamber?
