Re: Petter M corret colour.
Not sure but have heard "Post Office Red" banded about as the right colour for the Handyman range of M types, maybe ask Roland on the IF forum. I know my little M is that colour but I didn't paint it.

Mid Brunswick Green is a popular colour and said to be the correct colour.

Not for the "Handyman" range. Both my M types should be red, the little 1.5 was sold to Fowlers and went into a cement mixer and the 3 appletop was also a red one. The straight sided hopper handyman was red with a silver hopper.

Re: Petter M corret colour.
I'm a little confused (doesn't take much).
I was told my 1.5hp acorn top should be mid Brunswick green is that not correct then?
I'm keen to know as mine is primed and was going to paint it today.

Your Petter could well be MBG, I do not know what your Petter is, what colour was it when you got it, what model is it and what age?

Just to hull a spanner in... My Appletop is a "Universal" engine and was definitely red, I remember dad getting it back in the '80 and it was red then and original.

Re: Petter M corret colour.
Hi folks, Just noticed this interesting thread.
My cream Petter is a lovely engine which is slowly working its way up the queue, I will see if I can post a photo here. Anyway, the reason it is cream is that the engine came from a waterworks in London where it was part of an air starter compressor set. The person I bought it from rescued the engine from the water works by chance when it was being demolished and he recalls all the other plant in the building being the same cream colour. Eventually the owner moved up here but brought the engine with him where it sat in his garage for over 30 years. Presumably the engine was re-painted many years ago in its working life by the water board to match the colours of the rest of the plant in the building. There are traces of green underneath the cream so it probably did come out of the works green but was painted many years ago cream. I do not plan to do anything to this engine other than a service and any repairs needed, the cream will stay as its part of the history of the engine and IMO looks good. It is mounted on its original cast base but the water cooled compressor is long gone, hopefully I will find something that will go in its place.
I also have a red 3HP Appletop which is a standard Universal Oil Engine, NOT a Handyman. I have seen a few red Petter's up here which have been found in the Aberdeen area. All have red paint, black flywheels and the silver Petter script transfer.
Standard Acorn tops are mid brunswick green but have also seen red, black and maroon in the past. Black looks very nice when done well and you don't need to worry about all the oil spots !
Will we be seeing your Acorn top at Astle Billy ?
Cheers Dave

Interesting to hear that, I have seen one or two at Scone that were red. I think they were sold to a certain dealer up there possibly to drive mills. I will look up the details of where mine was original sold to to see if that offers any clues. Mine needs the bearings doing but does run well. I don't run it for long as the pulley side has almost 1/4" lift and don't want to cause any more wear on the big end etc until the mains are sorted.
Cheers Dave
