Carb Float + needle assembly

Post by gerrybongo on Tue Apr 08 2014, 23:50

I assume that you put the needle through the base of the float bowl , then locate the float onto the needle until the float clip fits in the groove , Question how does the float not fill with fuel and sink and allowing the fuel to flood the bowl , because they have to be a loose fit or how could you assemble in that way . I can only guess that when you run dry to stop the engine it empties the float , it obviously works as they have done for years , or is the one i have had in bits and assembled not correct in some way .

The float is sealed with solder so shouldn't contain any fuel, if it sinks then you have a leak (you will here fluid if you shake the float) which can be found by immersing it in water and watching for bubbles.

I can see the solder and understand the theory of how it seals , But it can't be an airtight fit or you could not pull the needle through .  confused

Oh yes it is...

There is a small tube in the middle of the float that the needle goes through, this is soldered to the float at both ends.
