Karl's Amanco 3-1/2HP Empty Karl's Amanco 3-1/2HP

Post by EarlBathurst Wed Dec 04 2013, 19:41

Hi all, As some of you may know i'm re-building My 3-1/2hp Amanco, at the moment i'm trying to get my head round the operation of the ignitor set up and how it operates! from looking at other pictures it seem that mine is missing a picker spring, does anybody know where i can get one ? it had a sort of adjustment screw apparatus fitted when i got it , what i can't work out is what the pricker spring does ie hold the pricker head down or lift it up and over the ignitor! Here's a couple of pictures of it.
Thanks in advance, Karl.

Sorry no I don't, don't even know if they are still on as it was a few days ago I saw them although there is a whole ignitor on there. You have me intrigued, how are you making a new flywheel or is it of a doner engine?

Easy its a copy-cast job, I just built up the outside rim and center boss with tape to allow for the shrinkage !

Keeps the tension on the picker , the bolt on top is fine adjustment for trip timing and lock down with locknut . If you look at my choreboy topic it will all become clear . ( chore boy topic under this one in same section)

Greetings Karl, I look forward to seeing this restoration unfold -

....as a steam nut as well ( I am trying to raise funds for the Nairobi Steam museum to restore some of their exotic exhibits a mountain class Beyer-Peacock 4-8-2+2-8-4 from East African Railways and another the 4-8-4+4-8-4 which is a Garratt articulated locomotive - we have 3 running for tourist runs through the game parks (serious foot plate fun here!)- and some fun items including the 'cow catcher' seating on the front FD Roosevelt used for shooting (not so PC anymore!)) and the claws from the real 'man eaters of Tsavo! - nothing like the Victorians to build a line rising up 5000 feet through lion infested bush! - hence its called the 'Lunatic Line' more detail here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nairobi_Railway_Museum

... but back to the point...I saw your engine 6023 had to be reduced in height by 4 inches - is this a modern requirement for bridges that weren't originally around?

Hi Hamish, Some interesting stuff you have there ! Yes i'm afraid any loco that wants to operate on the national rail network has to be 13'1'' or less, being as 6023 was 13'5'' a new chimney, safety valves and lower cab have to be made and fitted!

Some progress today, Finally worked out how the pricker operates, i have made a temporary spring the thing seems to do the job when turning over by hand.
Karl's Amanco 3-1/2HP Photo1_zps0cb9d1c1
also i've made all the fuel pipes from the tank to the carb, made and fitted the tank stand/box.
Two obsticals now remain, i still need to find the fuel valves and their seating fittings for the carb, o and there's the flywheels to finish machining !

Yup, red oxide, that's how it'll stay until I've made, aquired then test assembled everything ! Then it'll be dismantled for painting !
