New project - JAP 4/3

Post by TomCat on Sun May 25 2014, 19:26

One of our customers came into our car parts warehouse last week asking where he could obtain some black high temp engine paint and sealants for his old lawnmower, it's not exactly the stuff we deal with but my manager directed him to me for advise, as in his words 'he likes old rusty stuff' and we got chatting. I told him about the paints I'd used in the past and where I got them from and mentioned my Coborn and Wolseley engines. It came to pass that he had an old JAP engine in the back of his garage that his Father had purchased many years ago and would I be interested in it. The deal was done and for the grand sum of £25 I became the new owner of a new project without even seeing it. The engine was duly delivered by him to our depot on Sat morning saving me a trip to pick it up. He has done some research and it seems it's a JAP 4/3, 1940 model, serial No 4/3/B/P - engine number 91723/1.
Anyway, I got it home and jet washed it down and have started the strip down in readiness for a clean up and rebuild. All seems ok so far and it even has a nice fat spark, the exhaust valve was stuck open but a few squirts of penetrating oil has sorted that out, the bore shows no signs of wear so all should be well. The down side is, it has no cowling tin work, but I'll cross that bridge at a later date.
Pulley side.
Flywheel side.
Washed off.
Partially stripped down.
A large very tight nut that will take some effort to shift.

Thanks guys, info much appreciated. Nice work Kev, that looks great. Does anybody know if the cowling bits are available anywhere?

Progress is going well so far and with luck I should have her running over the weekend. All bits have been removed, cleaned and refitted ready for a start up. One thing however is causing me concern - I have a nice spark at the plug, but I also seem to have a nice (or nasty) spark at the points. I've cleaned up the points and all looks good, but shouldn't there be a condenser in here somewhere? scratch The mag in question is a Wicpac CJ936. Any help appreciated.
