Its funny how one minute you have a engine sat in the shed like this

fairbanks headless winter project DSCN0225_zps5d6880d8

then at around 10.00 i popped into the shed to tidy things up and lock up and stood there pondering as you do next thing 20 minutes later you end up with this

fairbanks headless winter project 0192_zps1a0fd8ae

fairbanks headless winter project 0202_zpsd13d0be5

fairbanks headless winter project 0212_zps24dfa45f

fairbanks headless winter project 022_zps82bba925

not many parts to this engine at all , all i can do now is to remove the flywheels and give the block and other parts a good clean with degreaser . and then i get get rubbing the paint down !

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO IT? LOL

But saying that it does look good, thought this was a winter project cause if you carry on at this rate it will be done end of October. Y ou say, rub the paint down, wouldent it be better to strip paint to bare metal ?

giving it a birthday !

i think all other bits will be taken down to bare metal but the block is so smooth and the paint is so hard i will give it a clean , and get the scotchbrite on it then some 800 or 1000 wet and dry and give it a rub over .

not yet Embarassed

In the week i will nip into screwfix and get some red oxide as the stuff i have here is terrible like spreading jam on a brush ! and drys with brush marks ... never buy tractol paint !

now im thinking on the colour as spoken to 2 paint mixers and gave them a dupont code which is a american paint code and they can not match it , so i guess im going to have to go buy eye ....

looking at abes's fairbanks that chris painted .

http://www.stationaryengineforum.net/t7473-new-toy-great

and been looking on the craftmasters website i think this is best match .....

http://www.craftmasterpaints.co.uk/colours-standard-range.htm its the classic green

and do i paint the conrod and balance weights on the crank green too or go for black ? As normal all moving parts will be wire brushed and polished up same with the nuts and bolts , split pins will be replaced for new too .

I say to for black as it looks nicer, I think but it's your engine your choice!

spent a couple of hours in the shed today cleaning and rubbing down the block .

fairbanks headless winter project 0073_zps248c133c

rubbed down and masked up ready for the high build primer or red oxide have not decided which yet ...

fairbanks headless winter project 0083_zps7bf4d8d2

Not sure how to mask this hole up and i have got the intention spraying the block

Had a quick look at the crank and main journals , all seem ok .

fairbanks headless winter project 0063_zps52d3040f

left side

fairbanks headless winter project 0044_zps8de2ab6c

right side

fairbanks headless winter project 0053_zpsb0283327

crank , this is the worst so might see if i can clean it up with some extremely fine wet and dry or scotchbrite

Took the axles off the trolley , cant believe some people how they fabricate axles at times .... Or is this a that will do job ....

No need for a primer if you rub down Matt, just 1 of undercoat and a couple of top coats

you never know what might happen when i apply a undercoat ? as the paint might react with the older paint underneath will will see what happens . If that happens i will have to get the paint stripper out Crying or Very sad

Should be fine, oil based paint on oil based paint and all that, even a primer will react with the wrong paint.

Abes could you do me a favor ? on a scrap piece of wood or ideally steel paint a little bit with red oxide and once gone off paint with a coat or 2 of the green . When i come down i can take it away and get it matched somewhere .

Cheers , matt

thought to myself i should get the bare metal bits with some red oxide , so had a look around and found some old red oxide that last used 3 years ago and it was a nearly new tin and tell you what .... it paint lovley not too thick like other rubbish i have found .

next thing after painting the are patches i nearly covered the whole block then sod it il paint it all ...Embarassed

fairbanks headless winter project 0012_zps08ffa365

even moved to the other shed which is insulated and i can work on the other bits and not get crap over the block .
