Hi all - I'm new to the forum, so hope this is in the right place!

I've recently acquired a Mk12/2 attached to a Simplite pump. I bought it not working and have spent a few evenings tinkering on in the shed to see if it could be brought back to life.

So far, I've
- Unjammed the exhaust valve
- Removed a lot of carbon from the head/valves
- Lapped the intake/exhaust valves
- Cleaned and set the points
- Reset the timing, twice - first time I'd managed to get 3/8 on the downward stroke.
- Removed the Carb, taken it to bits and tried to clean as best I can the white dust/oxide that was inside - there was a LOT.
- Replaced the pilot jet inside the carb
- Replaced one of the gaskets going into the intake.

Once I'd done all that it started pretty much on first pull. The joy of it spluttering into life was brilliant! It ran then for about 45s to a minute and stopped. Now, I can get it to run for around 30s every time I start it, but it then seems to run out of puff and stop. It's a bit smoky, but then it's probably not run for years, so I expected a bit.

I've no idea what the adjustments are on the carb are (I'm new to them) - it's a B10/2. It seems to run better when the main jet is backed out the carb body by a couple of turns. There seems to be essentially three other adjustments on the carb - a large open/closed tab - fuel? a butterfly which is attached to something coming out the crank case (governor), and a small spring loaded needle adjuster at the top (not sure what this is).

Looking for any pointers at all to get this running more smoothly (and for longer!)

I've had the fuel tank, pipe and banjo bolt off thee gone and cleaned out, had the carb apart for what feels like the 100th time and clean edit again. There was a but more grot came out, but And when it went all back together it ran for around 45s, so a very very slight improvement. I've worked out the thing I thought was a fuel tap on the carb is in fact the choke. I've also worked out that I can extend the running time by repeatedly screwing in and out the main jet - but I don't really know what that means. Also I don't quite understand how the petrol gets to the main jet. Still feels like there's a pipe or opening in the carb that's still blocked.

Still looking for help Sad

Ok. Finally worked it out, and thought I'd post back, just in case someone else ran into the same again. Also, sorry about the last post - autocorrect on my iPad wasn't that hot.

Today I took the carb apart for the 101st time, and after reading the manual again got the distinction between pilot jet and main jet. Essentially, I unscrewed the pilot jet a couple of turns before putting the carb back together. I just never expected an adjustable screw to be inside the carb that you couldn't adjust when it was running.
That sorted and everything back together and it ran brilliantly. Starts first pull and I even managed to hook the pump up to some hoses. It's pumping water happily until the petrol tank ran dry. Brilliant.

Hi, d0 you have the B10 carb on the Mk 12/2 (the one with the red plastic airfilter ?). If so is the main jet (the one inside the carb) adjustable? I thought the pilot jet (on the outside of carb) was the only jet that needs adjusting.

Im having the same symptoms with my Mk 12/1, except it runs for about 10 mins before giving up
