Storage
I find for storing bigger parts of an engine, IE fuel tank, carb, Use Tesco, Lydl ,aldi fruit boxes as they are free!!!!! (that's what I use along with chocolate tins and ice cream tubs .) Basically what I am trying to say is that they are useful.

Re: Storage
Good idea. I find most cardboard boxes are just too weak & all apart. The older type fruit boxes, made of thin wood or thick cardboard, make more sense.

Re: Storage
When my boss tidies up his cellar, I grab all the empty wine boxes. Ideal for parts and also good for storing your spuds. For smaller parts, I have a load of old metal baking tins that have done their turn in the kitchen.
Also, have a chat with the chef/cook in your local pub, see if you can get hold of some old mushroom trays/baskets, they're plastic but the're reasonably strong and they stack.

Right place, right time. It happens occasionally.

Re: Storage
Think Steve is a bit of a skip rat, although you can find some great stuff when stores etc are having a revamp. The big shopping centre in Newcastle is always have work done to there shops and the good stuff that gets thrown away is shameful.

Re: Storage
i use SMA baby milk tins
there easy to stak and write on them with a marker and when engine done, wipe it off ready for the next project ect
they have a lip on the lids so they stack well and ,seam to stop corrosion on parts cleaned for the rebuild or before there all ready for painting up
no good for parts bigger than a 24t2 carb ,but its the small bits that normally get lost or misplaced

Re: Storage
It's easy for you to get old milk tins with having all the kids you have Kev and probably more on the way, see guys this is what happens when you read engine maunals in bed no control !!!!!!! :stick lol: :stick lol: :stick lol:
I'm very happy with the storage bins I bought from Lidl or Aldi, it's the one where the rack screws to the wall and you clip the coloured (red, yellow, blue) bins to the rack, easy to use and see what's there ever holds very small parts no problem.

Re: Storage
I wish I could get those baby milk tins, I didn't even know they still did them.
Maybe I should put a wanted ad on Freecycle for some. That's another good place for storage solutions. Old chests of drawers, cupboards, boxes, crates etc etc, they turn up on there quite often. i got a massive black bag full of old Tupperware containers a while back, I still haven't used them all yet. They're good for small parts as well, especially the ones that still have their lids (inevitably some lids go missing over time).

Re: Storage
I was going to ask why you would have empty wine boxes - they should be full - but then of course you wouldn't be drinking any - which in itself is a crime!
I'm a huge fan of 'upcycling' and given the responses on this thread it looks like we all keep an eye out for a chance to save a few pennies - its satisfying when you get a bargain/ skip win!
bring on more wasteful industrial/ shopping mall/ workers/ householders!
We should start a website identifying where all the skips are!
Happy hunting!

Congratulations Kev! - Good to hear you're growing the future 'Kev Engineering Team' - when the crying gets too much crank an engine and it will 1) drown the sound and 2) send the nipper into a deep sleep!
... I like the way you mention your good lady is 'up the duff again' almost as if you had nothing to do with it

Re: Storage
Congratulations Kev.
The problem I have discovered is that a lot of the formula tins have been 'redesigned'. They're now cardboard things with crappy plastic lids, so no use for anything (except maybe keeping a polar bears feet dry for a little longer!).
Joe.

You never have enough space. If i build another shed, it's full in no time.(I'm up to 9 at present) What i'd really like is a big barn.rubythursday wrote:My problem is where to put all the boxes and tins! 3 sheds and counting.

Re: Storage
Also keep an eye out, especially around Christmas, for the trays of satsumas/tangerines. Very sturdy (hardboard?) and stack well.
