OK ,so I've removed the carburettor and the valve cover plate. I can see the valves and springs but how on earth do I get a valve spring compressor in there so that I can remove the collets?  Is there some special tool I need or I am missing something ?

Ah - turns out the springs are not as strong as I thought - a piece of flat bar with a slot in and an extra pair of hands does the trick.
