Petter m main bearings stripdown help and mag gear
Hi all I have a 1932 petter m with calibrator lubricator iam in the process of stripping it down, the pulley side flywheel is stuck so I ve got the flywheel of on the starting handle side and intend to take the main bearing off and then slide crank and flywheel out by not sure how to strip the main bearings, these are roller ball type,
So I got the bearing outer casing off and have large nut then a lock washer and and another nut how do I strip down from here, does the nut come off anticlockwise or clockwise or does it stay on, this is the starting handle side, also the mag gear on the crank has a chipped tooth about quarter missing ,I was thinking of welding and build up the section and then profile it and file it, as I don't have a magneto don't know if I can leave it and get away with it or can it be welded, any info would be very helpful, cheers john

Hello John,
I know its a pain but when you have been a member for a week or so you can post pictures - your discriptions are good - but a pic really helps - especially on the chipped gear - it all depends on how chipped...
I find I get a lot more answers or help after attaching pics - its because non of this lot can read of course....
best
Hamish

Sorry been away for a bit and other commitments I do apologise Hamish but I am now back onto it , I have goy the whole engine now stripped down apart from a missing pyramid glass for the calibrator lubricator it pretty much all there, I have now got a magnet and proper drive gear now, only major issue is the frost crack which I will repair and the other is the left side main roller ball bearing is rumbling after cleaning the dried grease in it, but has no play in it, do they settle a bit with fresh grease packed in ,also here is the chipped mag gear what do you think repair and weld or do I turn it round so the drive is not pulling on the chipped side , if you know what I mean

That chipped gear will probably be OK to use as it is.

Looks like there will be just enough tooth surface left to be ok. I would test by fitting the mag, oiling up and turning over carefully to make sure.
I would think trying to repair or weld will be difficult and may cause further problems. Worst case you can replace the gear, crankshaft gears tend to be easier to find than the mag gears.
Cheers
