First Post and Picture Upload Test
Hi All,
As we are all having to stay at home and isolate, I thought I would use this time to attempt to put up my first post with images of some of my engines. Please bear with me if it all goes wrong, if I don't try I'll never know if I can do it!
Hopefully a picture of my 5 HP 1919 Victory Model Petter.
This one is of my c1940 Jowett built (Scott designed) Bofors Gun Generating set, producing 130v 3 phase supply. Not a very practical supply!
If this works, I hope these picture will be of some interest to other members, during this period when all the stationary engine events are cancelled.
Other pictures could follow, if this is successful. We could have a virtual rally.
Regards,
Neil.

Re: First Post and Picture Upload Test
Looks like you've cracked the upload lark, is that a Velocette in the first pic?

Nice M, I'm assuming it is a Victory? Mine has the same wonky bottle, must have been a bad day...

Hi Stuart,
Yes the upload seemed to work, which is a relief and yes that is a Velocette Valiant. I'm not only afflicted with collecting stationary engines but also collecting the range of Velocette lightweights as shown in the picture below. This shows my Valiant, Vogue and the Velocette scooter the Viceroy. I do also have an LE just not in the picture. I hope I haven't broken protocol by posting a picture of bikes, I just thought you showed an interest.
Kind regards,
Neil

Re: First Post and Picture Upload Test
Hi Villiers,
Yes as you say, it is a 5 H.P. Victory model M, with Victory cast into the head. I have thought about elongating the holes in the exhaust flange, to allow the pot to sit upright, as it currently upsets my O.C.D. However I suppose it is part of the history of the engine and I would also risk cracking the casting, so it will have to stay as it is!
Regards,
Neil

Nice collection of bikes, I've been riding 50+ years and still commute on a Japscrap bike.

Re: First Post and Picture Upload Test
Welcome along Neil,
Love the Scott/Jowett PA/PAB set, I had a PAB engine on it's own, also built by Jowett but sold it to be reunited with a Bofors out the Lizard. Would have loved a complete set, I'm a bit gutted I sold it as while mine was a pig to start it ran quite nice once there.

Re: First Post and Picture Upload Test
Hi Stuart, yes I really like the Scott/Jowett generating set myself, although it seems they are not appreciated by everybody. Possibly this is because they are 2 stroke and designed to operate at 3000 rpm, to deliver the 3 phase 50 Hz output. This makes them rather frantic when operating, not like the more sedate slow running 4 stroke agricultural engines, that most people like and are more familiar with. I have had the set for one year now, I collected from Devon in March of last year. When I collected it, sight unseen, as the seller did not have email or any internet, it was rather tired looking, as seen in the pictures but importantly it was all complete, including three of the four side covers. I did manage to get it to run but there were issue, too many to discuss here at the moment. In the end, I had to take the whole set apart and undertake a quick clean up and rebuild. I didn't want to do a full restoration, as I felt it deserved to keep its remaining paint and original looks. It now runs well and surprisingly it still generates electricity. I do find to get it to start it easily, I have to put a few drops of petrol through the spark plug hole, after which it does fire up fairly reliably. Hope you enjoy the pictures, shame I can't get the set out to show at the moment. Neil

Re: First Post and Picture Upload Test
Lovely complete set. I've got copies of the Stationary Engine magazine articles somewhere if you would like copies?
This was mine, I used to have a Scott SE as well, completely different beast and the change in technology between the two is outstanding.

Very nice to see a complete unit, Neil, and a sympathetic restoration/preservation of this unit. There are folks out there who do like to see something different to the usual agricultural engines

Re: First Post and Picture Upload Test
Port configuration was quite revolutionary for the time having a "boost" port opposite the exhaust port.
Also the cooling works opposite to most drawing cold air over the cylinder head and expelling hot air out of the flywheel.

Re: First Post and Picture Upload Test
Hi Steve, thanks for your offer of the SE mag articles but I do have a copy of all of those. Yes I believe the boost port design was ahead of it's time, with motorcycle engine designers later claiming they were first to use the innovation. The type of air cooling was described by Scott's as "Forced induction air cooling".
For interest sake I have attached a copy of the information sheet I made up to go with the exhibit, hopefully to inform the public on the use and technical specification of the set.
