Whe I did my D's Ryan I emptied them wiped out as much as possible, took them up to local garage sprayed with gunk cleaner and used the steam cleaner in the jet wash area.

They guy only charged me a couple of quid for using his steam cleaner.

Brought it up like new.

Took it home dried it off and left air heater on it for an hour.

Job done.

cheers

Mart.

Wipe it all with Rags and soak it with Parrafin and keep wiping .

I usually suspend mine over a large bucket and use parrafin from a spray bottle with a paintbrush to get in the awkward areas .
There realy is no way of doing it without a mess

It does help if you can get the engine nice and hot before you drain the oil first though

if you get in there with a low viscosity degreaser and spray it on with something like a wwhat do you call them...... spray bottles used fro detergent in the kitchen. then the degreaser will loosen the sludge and scale off, then rise it off with the said sprayer, using either diesel or parrafin, it wont get it all off, but it probably wont be overly messy, just let the degreaser do its thing, then make sure you get all of it out, or the next batch of oil may not last long! lol
