Re: My first Lister D
The man I bought it off swore it was a runner but hadn't run for a while.
First thing when I got it home was fill the float chamber with petrol and wind the handle - the little beasty fired and ran until the float chamber emptied so I was a happy bunny.
The petrol tank hasn't had fuel for a while and the bottom is covered in flakes of rust so that has come off and i'll clean that out thoroughly- sort the fuel tap and petrol pipe then give it a proper run with petrol in the tank and water in the hopper before I decide wether I need to strip it down for a complete overhaul or just just give a quick clean and paint and leave the overhaul for now.
I have no idea at the moment what she is going to run - no doubt something suitable will come up eventually once i start looking.

That is a possibility but I'll get the engine done properly before I start seriously searching

should be a video
Fuel system cleaned and reset, timing set abour right(i will have to look up the correct setting) and no exhaust yet but if I hold a 2mtr length of tube on the end of the existig fitting she soundas a load better

Re: My first Lister D
you can't go far wrong with a Lister D. Yours looks to be a good one and runs well. I'd get rid of that flexible pipe on the fuel line though.

Re: My first Lister D
Nice D project.......Not sure if you saw my reply to your original post, first thing to check is the state of the oil ......I would always recommend checking the state of the oil before trying to start... More wear can be caused by a few minutes running after years of sitting than years of working with good oil in the sump. I would junk that plug cap and possibly the lead, looks like a car silicon type lead - replace with copper HT and an HT terminal to help preserve the magneto.
Cheers Dave

Re: My first Lister D
Thanks for the comments Dave l am planning to change the lead but it wouldn't occur to me to run an engine on old oil. I always change oil as a matter of course before running an old engine. Learnt that the hard way from doing up old mtorbikes

Re: My first Lister D
Well I changed the plug cap and lead today and cleaned the carb out again because she ran fine for about 10 mins and then died as if suffering from fuel starvation. The carb and float chamber where absolutely spotless ( I did clean them yesterdaybut had to check)..
Ran her up again only to get the same problem but this time it wouldn't start again for love or money and on checking there was a distinct lack of spark
No spare mag so back to basic mechanics and disconnect the coil to get it replaced and temporarily wire a 12v car ignition coil and battery in place using the points and capacitor in the magneto. She fired up first go and ran until I switched it off
So I'm off to locate either a mag or coil for same so I can get it back to original.

Re: My first Lister D
If you have a multimeter you can check the coil resistance, should be around 4 - 5kohms which indicates the coil is ok.

Re: My first Lister D
I have multimeter and yesterday the coil seemed ok but today it ran once for around 10mins and then no spark and the coil is open cicuit I just tested it again and it reads fine so the only concusion I can draw is it breaks down under load. The condenser, Points, HT lead and timing must be Ok because they are fine with the 12volt coil. so I'm searching for a replacement for the mag coil.

Hopefully a quick video of the latest state of the project. Home made exhaust and a bodged ignition system but she runs well and starts easily.

Re: My first Lister D
Well I finally managed to get the original magneto operational so stripped off the temporary 12v system and she seems to run reasonably well.
Video posted in the videos section. (yes i know the shed needs a good tidy)

Re: My first Lister D
Hopefully a video of the lister D generating 240V a/c
It might not be the prettiest of jobs but it works and didn't exactly cost a lot
The old alternator comes from a Citroen we scrapped and the battery is from the same donor - The drive belt was just hanging in the workshop and the inverter is from when we went caravanning and has been sat around for about 5 years.
The battery by itself will only power the inverter for about 15 mins before a low voltage warning cuts it out but with the lister powering the alternator it happily supplies 600watts all the time the engines running.
