Dead Petter
Here is a mystery that maybe you more experienced folks can help me with......Petter m 3HP..last time out was firing up a dream after we purchased a good used magneto with a good fat spark...done all the timings and as I say was chugging along very well...BUT now we wheeled her out and she just will not start...no spark! now to my mind a magneto would, as it wore, would perform less well and give a weak spark before giving up the ghost but no spark at all from a fat one in one fell swoop? have removed it and put it in a warm place in case of damp but still no luck......and as an aside ...are reconditioned mags really close to £400??....if thats the case looks like a petter on ebay very soon
bigsja- I really need to post more

Re: Dead Petter
a rewound coil, new condenser and general overhaul should cost under £200, so don't go buying a recon mag for £400 unles you've won the lottery.

Re: Dead Petter
Worth doing a few checks before sending it off for rebuild. Are the points opening and gapped correctly ? Take the HT lead pickup off (two screws) and check the carbon brush and small spring are intact and touching the slip ring. Check your HT lead is securely pushed/screwed into the HT pick up.
Mags do fail suddenly and if you have done a few checks most likely it is the secondary coil that is open circuit and will need rewound. An original BTH mag coil will be very old and the insulation breaking down, only option is a rewind. Last time I had one done it was around 120 - 150 for a full rebuild, including new condenser and slip ring.
Better to spend the money on a rebuild than buy another 'good' mag only to have it fail again. Petters in particular like a hot spark and a D21 plug is recommended. Cheers Dave
